Throwback Thursday: Duval cards remarkable eagle to shoot 59
The Background
David Duval started the fifth and final round of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic seven shots off the pace.
What followed was simply incredible…
The Scene
Duval opened up his front nine with a five-under-par 31 to put himself into contention in California. His opening nine included five birdies and four pars.
However, on the back nine the American put on an exhibition of golf as he birdied six holes and eagled the last to shoot a back nine of 28 to finish 13 under for the day.
What made his back nine so impressive was the fact that the longest putt Duval faced on the back nine was a 20 footer on the 13th. He managed to knock five approach shots inside 4 foot, one of which was with in in six inches.
The Legacy
Duval’s effort was just the third time that tour pro had broken 60 on the PGA Tour and it was the first time it had been done during a final round.
Justin Thomas shot a 59 on his way to winning the 2017 Sony Open, the similarity with Duval’s 59 was that both players finished with an eagle, the only players to do so who have achieved the magic number.
What new gear are you putting in the bag this year?

Another club that has stood the test of time in his bag is a Nike Method Core MC-3i putter which has had to have the SuperStroke grip changed at least three times. Ball of choice is the Titleist ProV1.
