As the authorities admit concern over driving distances, we name and shame the worst culprits
Who are the biggest hitters in golf?
Well, after a report from the USGA and the R&A has concluded they are officially concerned about driving distances, we thought we’d better name and shame them.
We think the authorities are right to take a closer look at the impact new equipment is having but also think their are numerous other contributing factors and variables.
But while we wait to see what the next steps in the investigation process are, we thought we’d take a look at some of the guys responsible for a jump in overall driving distances.
The criteria for the below list is almost as complicated as the 24-page USGA driving distance report.
Only players from the top-50 in the world rankings have been included.
The average driving distance number has either been taken from the 2017 European or PGA Tour season, or the 2018 season where more than 26 rounds have been played.
1. Biggest hitters in golf – Tony Finau 323.7 yards (PGA Tour 2018, 34 rounds)
Driver used:Ping G400 Max
Ball used: Titleist Pro V1
Finau, a former Nike hardware player, switched to Ping woods and irons last year before signing a deal with Ping at the start of 2018.
Surprisingly, he uses the new G400 Max driver which offers ultimate stability and forgiveness. Any golf club with the word ‘Max’ is expected to be aimed more at your higher handicappers.
But a raft of Ping staff players have switched into the G400 Max and, like Finau, have noticed some very impressive results.
“It looked really similar to the G driver I was using,” Finau told PGATour.com
“I didn’t use the G400 because it looked a little different, but the Max looked very similar to the G I was using. For me, it has to look good from the start. I have to look like I’m going to hit it far and straight, so when I look down at this one, it looks like a driver I can hit.
“The driver comes out in a nice high window and I believe I fly this one about 8-10 yards farther than the G — and I guess that’s where the Max part kicks in.”
