Weather for The Open Championship

The Open Championship has a history of inclement weather over its storied history, but what does the forecast look like for Royal Liverpool Golf Club over the next week?

The likes of Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler will be battling for the Claret Jug, while this year’s three major winners Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka and Wyndham Clark will be among the favourites trying to become Champion Golfer of the year.

Will the weather be kind to players, spectators and volunteers at the 2023 Open Championship? Let’s take a look at the weather for next week’s edition of the event in Hoylake…

Unsurprisingly, there will be rain in the air throughout the week at The Open. The first two days of the competition look to see the best weather, with only a shower or two on Thursday, while Friday is supposed to be clear most of the day, with only some cloud patches.

Saturday morning should see some rain, before turning to just cloudy conditions in the afternoon. Sunday will be similar to Saturday, but the wind direction is set to change from a westerly wind, which it is set to be for the first three days, into a southerly wind for the final round. That could be a factor in who lifts the Claret Jug.

According to our friends at Accuweather, it will not be cold over the course of the week, with the temperature reaching as high as 18 degrees on the opening two days, before possibly pushing 20 degrees on the weekend.

Open Championship weather forecast

Tuesday and Wednesday’s practice rounds should both see good weather, with the course being firm and fast ready to start the tournament on Thursday.

A firm and fast links golf course – a phrase that encapsulates The Open Championship and what it is known for. Royal Liverpool should be a treat to play in those conditions in the early days.

Royal Liverpool weather in July

The Open takes place in the English summer, and the weather on the Wirral should be as expected for this time of year. The average low for this time of year is roughly 13 degrees, while the average high is about 20 degrees.

Sunrise and Sunset

The average summer’s day will see around 16 hours of daylight. At this time of year, sunrise in Hoylake is around 5.10am and sunset is approximately 9:25pm.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
