First Impressions

I got the pleasure of attending the launch of the TP Reserve line a couple of weeks back in Ireland at The K Club. With nine different putter options available, the M47 was the one that caught my attention the most. Looks wise, this is absolutely right up my street. I have always favoured mallet putters; however, nothing too big and clunky. It was a close call between this and the slightly larger and rounder M37 model which is also absolutely stunning.

The M47 is the smallest mallet putter in the new TP Reserve line and offers that hybrid between a blade and a mallet for those players who want a little more forgiveness than a blade without having a hefty mallet. The M47 also has the widest topline of the three mallet heads.

There is only one style of neck bend for this style of head, a single bend shaft which makes this more of a face-balanced offering. This help keep the face as square to the path as possible as is best for players with straighter putting strokes. I would say if you are someone who prefers a putter with lots of toe hang another TP Reserve model may suit you better.

TaylorMade has been big player in the putter game for a while now, and it is hard to believe the TP Reserve line is their first milled putter range. Like the rest of the collection, the M47 comes with a genuine leather headcover with an incredibly soft fleece lining and a magnetic fastening.

NCG Review

Having seen this putter in an indoor studio, I was excited to get out on the golf course and give this a thorough test. Straight away, I loved the way this putter sat behind the ball. For me, this style and shape really suited my eye, which helps.

Initially, I was unsure about the lack of alignment line on the top line but I actually found it really easy to start the ball on line without this. I think the deeper cavity in the middle section of the putter helps with this as it allows you to frame the golf ball nicely.

The new TP Reserve putters are milled from 303 stainless steel, and feel more art than science. Each putter is individually milled, which takes around forty-five minutes for one engineer to complete, this is a very labour-intensive process to deliver the detail and finish you expect from this type of putter. Some of the detailing is so fine that you can’t actually see it with the human eye alone.

While the milling on the face may look similar to the pure roll insert grooves we see on other TaylorMade putters, it isn’t there for the purpose of improving ball roll. This milling is designed to control the sound and feel, which certainly works as this putter felt extremely soft off the face.

The M47 features performance sole weighting that is designed to allow each player to customise the weighing of the putters. I think this is great as each putter’s swing weight is tailored to a specific length of shaft, in order to create optimal stability. If you are someone who plays a putter that is longer or shorter than standard this is a big bonus.

Overall, I think that the TP Reserve M47 is a great putter and definitely something that I am considering putting in play. If you are after a classic looking mid-mallet design this is a really good option.
