Rory unleashes scathing LIV attack as ‘hard to stomach’ reunion looms
Not even a historic Tour Championship win could prevent Rory McIlroy from taking another swipe at his rival league
Rory McIlroy produced arguably his most scathing attack on LIV Golf yet following a heroic Tour Championship victory – throwing hilarious shade at his rival league before doubling down on his ever-growing disgust towards the breakaway series.
The Northern Irishman produced a comeback for the ages in Atlanta to pip Scottie Scheffler and land a third FedEx Cup – alongside a bucket load of cash – but quickly turned his attention to LIV in the aftermath of the win.
“The 70th hole is a nice time to take the lead of a golf tournament,” he said when asked about the nature of the victory. “Or the 52nd hole if you play somewhere else.”
Then, after throwing shade at LIV’s 54-hole format, McIlroy’s jokes turned to frustration as he addressed his pending reunion with the defectors at the BMW PGA Championship – where 18 LIV golfers are in the field to play at Wentworth.
“I hate what it’s doing to the game of golf. I hate it, I really do.” McIlroy continued. “Like it’s going to be hard for me to stomach going to Wentworth in a couple of weeks’ time and seeing 18 of them there. That just doesn’t sit right with me.
“So yeah, I feel strongly. I believe what I’m saying are the right things, and I think when you believe that what you’re saying is the right thing, you’re happy to stick your neck out on the line.”
