McIlroy explains why he’s not afraid to speak his mind – and don’t expect him to change
World No 1 Rory McIlroy has won a lot of fans for never failing to hide his emotions. But he says it’s just who he is
Rory McIlroy has never been one to shy away from speaking his mind – whether it be in interviews, on social media or, indeed, out on the course.
So why is he so up front with his opinions – particularly with the media – when so many refuse to open up?
“I feel like it’s therapeutic,” the World No 1 said during a Sky Sports watch-along of his 2019 Players Championship win.
“I need to tell it to somebody and [the media] are usually the first ones I get to tell it to.
“If someone has taken the time to come up with a thoughtful question, then I want to at least give them the respect of coming up with a thoughtful answer. I feel like I’ve always had a great relationship with the media.
“That’s just my personality. I get it from my father and he is very much that way.”
And if you don’t like the honest side of McIlroy, then unfortunately for you he has no plans to change his tune.
He added: “There has been times when something I say will get criticised or misconstrued in some way and it will make me think, ‘Do I need to be that open?’
“But at the same time I want to let you guys in, I want to be interesting and I want to let you know my thoughts.
“It’s my nature, it’s the way I’ve always been and hopefully the way I’ve always will be.”
Don’t ever change, Rory.
