In episode 5 of our new instruction series, we cover the all important pre-shot routine and how it can help you relax when you need to most
Having a consistent pre-shot routine is one of the easiest routes to better golf, especially under pressure. It’s something the pros put so much emphasis on, yet the rest of us continue to undervalue its importance. Here are my top tips…
Building an effective pre-shot routine: The main points
In the video, I’m on a par 3 with Andy and straight away, he’s used his rangefinder from two yards further back than where he’ll be teeing off from. Nowadays, almost everyone has a laser or uses some sort of GPS system, so there’s no excuse for not getting an accurate number.

When he corrected this, I split the rest of his routine into sections – something I think is really important.
First, you should assess the variables that are going to impact the shot before picking the club and shape you want to hit. For example, things like wind, temperature, and flag location should all be considered in a good pre-shot routine.
