Three players to look for in 2018

Which young guns should you be on the lookout for throughout the golf season?

Since Tiger Woods’ career began to move towards its twilight years, people have been searching for his heir. A player who can dominate in the way he did, a player who can capture people’s imagination, a player who is so good that courses have to take precautions to ensure their supreme talent doesn’t make tournaments into processions.

There have been a number of candidates; Rory McIlroy for a long time was seen as Tiger’s heir apparent, however his career seems, to an extent at least, to have stalled a little as he has failed to kick on from winning four majors. Of course four majors is nothing to sniff at, but the way that he dominated and destroyed the field during his first US Open win in 2011 seemed to suggest he might be able to capture Tiger’s aggressive dominance but he has failed to do so.

Rickie Fowler had been mooted, a player who clearly has all the talent in the world, however he is yet to turn his skill into trophies and seems like he could end up being one of those players who is always close but never close enough. The supreme candidate at the moment seems to be Texan Jordan Spieth who has already picked up three majors at the tender age of 24, but he has also gone through struggles recently and it is hard to work out if he is going to enter an age of dominance or a slump.

The search then, goes on, and many people are looking for the next big thing that they can back and bet on to reach the stars and fill the void left by Tiger as his career continues to slowly peter out. Despite there being so many great betting offers out there, like the lots of betting offers at free bets.uk, which means you can bet on Golf for free, it is hard to commit money to one player from the cream of the current crop. Many will be hoping this year that a new candidate emerges, that a new star rises to the top.

There are some players who seem to be likely to make 2018 a breakout year, they might not quite make the impact Spieth did in 2015, when he exploded onto the scene in winning two majors, however they will likely do enough to throw their hats into the ring and lay claim to being the next big thing in golf. Here are three players that particularly stand out.

Aaron Wise

The 21 year old South African has managed to make a name for himself on the tour by playing solid and watchable golf. He has not had incredible results but for a player of his age he is showing real promise and is steadily getting better and better meaning this could be his real breakout year. He started to really get noticed in 2016, when at just 19, he finished tied for 16th at the John Deere classic. Since then he has worked hard on climbing up the ranking and becoming more acquainted with the professional game as has become a regular at top tournaments. If he can put together a good run of form there is no reason he cannot surprise at one of the majors.

Phachara Khongwatmai

The young Thai sensation was recently ranked within the world’s top 150 golfers despite being just 18 years old, he is the youngest ever winner of a professional tournament, which he won at just 14. He is perhaps a little too young to be thinking of putting the green jacket on or lifting the claret jug but he continues to look comfortable in exalted company and will be hoping to, at the very least, leave a mark on the majors this year to show that he will one day be there to claim the big prize. It might be a while before he really hits the big time but it will be fascinating to see how he gets on this year.

Ollie Schniederjans

Once ranked as the best amatuer in the world, Schniederjans is beginning to show the kind of talent that meant many feel he will be at the top of the golfing world sooner rather than later. In 2015 he finished tied 12th at The Open when he was only 22 and will be hoping that as he turn 25 this year that he can finally turn promise into trophies.
