Reason for a Fulford Golf Club review
We try to play Fulford once a year or so as it’s easily one of the best in Yorkshire and is right on our doorstep.
Where is it?
Fulford is on the south border of York, half an hour from Leeds and just off the A64.
What to expect
A true championship course, Fulford in fantastic condition all year round, is tough tee to green and has high quality consistent putting surfaces.
It’s no surprise this season it has hosted the Brabazon Trophy Northern Qualifier, PGA Champions Qualifier, Yorkshire Boys Championships and The PGA Lombard Championships.
There isn’t a single hole where you step up onto the tee and just think you can smack a driver and it will be fine.
You rarely have a hole running parallel that forgives a wild tee shot and this couldn’t be more evident when one of our playing partners, having an off day, lost eight golf balls.
My best bit
Once you cross the bridge and get onto the 6th, the course opens up from more a parkland feel to heathland. Some birdie chances are available from a mix of shorter 4s and reachable 5s.
What to look out for
If a course wants a hard closing stretch then the par 4 13th fits the bill perfectly. 446 yards off the yellows and 486 yards off the backs, this requires a drive and long iron just to reach front edge.
Adding to the length are well placed bunkers in driving range, out of bounds and also a stream – all down the left up to the green. This hole offers no forgiveness and you won’t be disappointed with a stress free bogey 5 in medal play.
When I go back
I will be getting the scrambled egg again, it’s fantastic!
