Nordea Masters betting tips and previewAugust 14, 2018 Golf News
Who should you be backing to win the Nordea Masters? Our betting expert Keel Timmins has been through the form...
I think England’s Matthew Southgate (33/1, 7 places) has been a little overlooked in the market for a player that has proven himself at this level, and surely a win on the European Tour is not that far away.
In truth, Southgate has done pretty much everything but win in recent years. He finished second at last year’s Irish Open and sixth at The Open, while the year before he ran Rory McIlroy close at the Irish Open at the K Club.
This course has elements of links about it and I suspect the 29-year-old will enjoy this test. Among fairly weak opposition, he should go close.
Marcel Siem (125/1, 5 places) has found a bit of form recently; the German went on a horrific run when missing six straight cuts, but he’s made the last two weekends and finished 14th in Scotland.
Even though Siem finished 54th last time out in Germany, he ranked sixth in driving accuracy and 15th in greens in regulation in the field.
Clearly he’s found something in his game and looks a little overpriced in this weak field.
Finally, let’s have a purely speculative effort in the form of Birgir Hafthorsson (400/1, 7 places).
The Icelander won gold last week at the European Golf Team Championships in the mixed event alongside the women, while he also finished runner-up in the men’s event with teammate Axel Boasson.
The 42-year-old made history last year by becoming the first Iceland player to win on the Challenge Tour.
There’s no doubt that this is a significant step up, but this isn’t the strongest of events and he’ll be more than comfortable in these parts being a Nordic native.
