Golf’s most unwanted record was almost beaten as the 17th at Sawgrass strikes again
The record for the highest score on the 17th at Sawgrass is Bob Tway’s 12 during the 2005 Players Championship.
We know this because the PGA Tour remind us time and time again ahead of every edition of the so-called fifth major.

And that record was oh-so nearly matched during the Thursday of the 2021 Players when Byeong Hun An also dunked four in the water, but managed to get away with a two-putt 11.
No. 17 strikes again. Ben An records an 11 on the island green.

That’s the second-highest score ever on the 17th in the ShotLink era. pic.twitter.com/1nZ8a6HvY4
An can’t possibly have known he was on for the unwanted record when he confidently stood over that second putt without any reading of the green or lining up of his ball.
Still, he saw the funny side…
Only four players have posted double figures on the 17th at Sawgrass. As well as Tway and An, Robert Gamez also had an 11 and Phil Blackmar had a 10 – both in 1990.
