Todd goes back to back as remarkable turnaround continues

Brendon Todd missed 33 of 35 cuts between 2016 and 2018 as he battled swing yips. He's now won twice in a row

Mayakoba Golf Classic report: What happened at El Camaleon Golf Club?

Brendon Todd earned his second PGA Tour victory in as many starts when he took the title in Mexico.

Todd, who won the Bermuda Championship two weeks ago, was one of 12 players forced to return on Monday morning in the rain-delayed Mayakoba Classic.

He and Vaughn Taylor were tied when they restarted on the 15th at El Camaleon and Todd holed an 18-foot birdie putt on that hole to take the lead. An up-and-down for par at 18 was enough to earn his second trophy in three weeks and third overall.

Taylor tied in 2nd with Carlos Ortiz and Adam Long.

The win adds to a remarkable turnaround in Todd’s fortunes. The 34-year-old battled with full swing yips and from February 2016 to December 2018, he started 35 PGA Tour events and made the cut in just two.

“It’s just amazing how fast this game can turn,” Todd said. “It turned fast in the wrong direction for me in 2015, it turned fast the other direction for me, so I’m enjoying it and I’m just going to keep grinding.”

Mayakoba Golf Classic report: Talking points

Matt Kuchar returned to defend the title he won 12 months ago in controversial circumstances. He put in up a solid defence but in the end finished in a tie for 14th.

The highlight of his week came in Sunday’s final round when he carded a brilliant hole-in-one at the 8th.

Russell Henley had the headlines after the second round when he was assessed an eight-shot penalty for a bizarre rules breach (sort of).

We’ve got the full story on how his 69 turned into a 77.

What’s next?

The PGA Tour returns to US soil this week for the RSM Classic at Sea Island, where Charles Howell III will defend his infamous 2018 victory.
