Tiger Woods

Which players are changing their gear for Masters week?

It's Masters week so that means lots of interesting equipment news. Hannah Holden keeps us updated with her ongoing All the Gear column

It’s Masters week and Masters week means Masters equipment. It usually just involves lots of brands making their gear available in green…

From now until we get underway at Augusta on Thursday, I’ll be keeping this column updated with all the goings-on gear-wise at golf’s opening major.

Masters equipment: Frank goes front and centre

Tiger Woods’ pre-Masters press conference will be remembered less for what he said and more for what he was wearing.

Here’s a closer look:

The new shirt, dubbed simply “The Nike Polo”, features Frank, Woods’ tiger-shaped driver headcover that took on a personality of its own in the ’90s thanks to a series of Nike adverts that brought it to life.

Oh go on then…

Tiger was pretty coy about it in the presser, but suffice to say this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Frank.

The shirts are available now from the Nike website and will set you back around £50.

Masters equipment: Woods’ new sticks

In equally exciting news, if you’ve always dreamed of hitting the fairways with a set of clubs just like Tiger then you’re in luck, because TaylorMade’s new P7TW irons have been released.

The irons have been co-designed by the man himself and will be made available to the public. As he said:

Consumers have never had the opportunity to play irons like mine… until now.

Tiger’s irons were hundreds of hours in the making with TaylorMade developing nine designs, taking years to create the perfect set for the 14-time major champion.

New TaylorMade irons

Rather than crafting the irons as a set, TaylorMade have individually designed each clubhead so each iron meets the highest performance demands.

The P7TW irons feature fully-milled soles to prevent variations between irons and sets, meaning each irons shares the same precise finish. Tungsten weighting is added behind the sweet spot to give you premium feel just like Tiger.

With Milled Grind, knowing that I’m getting essentially the same set that I just wore out is huge. I no longer have to hit hundreds upon thousands of golf balls to find a set.

Each P7TW iron includes the same features as Tiger’s clubs including blade lengths, face height, Centre of Gravity progression, sole geometry, score lines and tungsten weighting.

New TaylorMade irons

Available from May 1 in return for £1,899. More information can be found on the TaylorMade website.

Masters equipment: Rory’s new wedge

Another TaylorMade staffer Rory McIlroy has added a 64° wedge into his bag at the WGC Match Play in Austin.

He stuck to the TaylorMade Hi Toe design which he uses in the other wedges in his bag, and he believes it will be particularly helpful around Augusta:

I’ve been messing around with a 64-degree lob wedge the last week or so. I think it’s something that could be beneficial around there.

Masters equipment: Give it up for the caddies

The brand, meanwhile, have launched their own bags which takes inspiration from the Augusta caddies and their traditional white boiler suit.

The bag lining and accessories contain azalea patterning – in reference to the famous pink flowers seen throughout Augusta National.

The base of the stand also includes the yardages of all 18 holes at the Masters.

We have already seen numerous players hit the fairways at Augusta with the new bag, including Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson and Haotong Li.

Masters equipment: Stamp duty

Justin Thomas has put some fresh wedges in the bag ahead of the Masters and the new stamping has caught people’s attention…

JT asked for the signature of Bob Vokey to be featured and let Aaron Dill take charge of the rest of the design.

References include his nickname Radar, his love for pimento cheese sandwiches, and a statement about “Brooks Koepka’s m$ney”.

But my favourite is the inclusion of his jacket size stamped all across his 57° wedge. We’ll have to wait until Sunday to see if he can slip into a 38R number.

Masters equipment: Now you see it

Puma recently released their new Union Camo Collection featuring a unique take on the recent camouflage trend. It was created by layering the outline of the United States and the state of Georgia specifically designed for the Masters.

Ahead of the first major, Cobra have released new Camo golf bags…

…as well as a Camo version of its new King F9 Speedback driver.

The new Union Camo Collection will make its debut when Rickie Fowler tees it up on Thursday.

Masters equipment: PXG Player

And finally, PXG have announced the signing of three-time Masters champion Gary Player ahead of the Masters Par 3 tournament.

Player, who won the Green Jacket in 1961, 1974 and 1978, will carry 14 PXG clubs in the bag for the Wednesday showpiece, including the 0811 X GEN2 driver in 9°  – which seems a bit odd given it’s a par-3 contest – as well as the 0311 XF Xtreme Dark GEN2 irons and the PXG GEN2 Brandon putter.
