Glenmuir Elgin golf sweater review: First Impressions

It’s April, which means two things in this country: either wind or rain. Or both.

Don’t let that sun fool you; I’d never venture out to the course at this time of the year with no outerwear. And the Elgin golf sweater might just be the perfect fit.

When I first picked the sweater up, it had me from the first moment I felt it. The cotton is noticeably soft to the touch, so I was raring to put it on and try it with my golf.

It is in fact made from 100% pure combed cotton. But what is this sorcery? Well, combed cotton isn’t just any type of cotton. It’s a special type that has been given a specific treatment before being spun into a yarn, which results in it having a much softer feel than regular cotton. It’s similar to merino wool, and is hand knitted with expertise!

It’s all designed to do one thing – retain the heat produced by your body and ensure durability, natural softness and breathability.

You wouldn’t usually associate a sweater with having a sporty look, but the Elgin defies tradition here. It’s got bold block colour contrasts and sports stripe arm details, making this golf sweater a top choice for style.

It’s also got a generously-sized collar to keep that pesky wind at bay, and a zip neck to give you added versatility when you need to adjust your comfort level.

No huge emblems here – just the discreetly placed Glenmuir branding on the right sleeve.

Glenmuir Elgin golf sweater review: On The Course

There was a veritable galaxy of weather systems at work when I put this sweater to the test for the first time. Great for reviewing purposes, but not so much for my self-esteem.

When I was teeing off, it was blowing a cold, northerly gale but, much to my delight, I’d had the Elgin on for about an hour beforehand as I drove to my golf course – Rudding Park – so the sweater had been heated up nicely in the car beforehand.

It retained heat superbly. Glenmuir have used active smart fibres here to thermoregulate to climate changes, releasing excess heat for breathability.

It’s a master at keeping you warm when the weather Gods are nowhere to be seen, but it did also rain on testing day, so make sure you have an umbrella or suitable hooded jacket at the ready.

But you want to know how it performs when the sun comes out, right? The norm here would be to take it off as soon as that happens because you’d expect to feel like a toaster. But that’s not the case at all.

I’ll refer back to thermoregulation here because it works both ways. We already know it’ll warm you up when it gets cold, but when the sun does shine, it releases that built-up bodily heat to cool you down. It’s genius!

There’s no irritation or prickly heat like you might have experienced before with sweaters either. Just pure comfort, thanks to the combed cotton. Glenmuir have treat us well here.

It’s also really easy to play golf in. There’s no restriction of movement, so it won’t hamper your swing like that old dustcloth you might be still be wearing now does…

Glenmuir Elgin golf sweater review: The 19th hole

If you thought it ended on the course, think again.

For me, the 19th hole is comprised of either going out for a few drinks at my local, or for a spot of dinner in town – when I’ll wear casual clothes and want to feel comfortable. Would I consider wearing this? Yes, I would.

I am delighted to report that the Glenmuir Elgin golf sweater goes wonderfully well with sneakers and a pair of denim jeans.

Even if the colour I reviewed it in isn’t to your taste, Glenmuir offer it in two different options: neon green with black, and white with ocean blue. I’d say those two colours would be more suited to the golf course as they stand out more, but you might disagree.
