The decade in golf: NCG’s favourite major finish

Which conclusion to a major was the most impressive? Our Fourball team look back on the past decade and pick out some of the best in the big ones

So, what was the best major finish of the last decade?

Dan: What about Dustin Johnson winning the US Open in 2016 in the midst of the moving ball controversy? Truly, the USGA could not have made it harder for a man to win his first major.

Then again, I can’t think of any other player better equipped to shut out the noise than DJ. You sense he barely knows what score he’s on at the best of times. He started the day four shots adrift of Shane Lowry (whatever happened to him?) and won by three – and that’s even after being penalised by a shot even though he’d been told on the course that he was in the clear.

Steve: Rory McIlroy’s 3-wood at Valhalla at the 2014 PGA Championship and a final hole played in darkness to edge out Phil Micklelson was pretty dramatic.

Andrew: Tough one. This decade has produced some classics. How could you not love the drama of the 2013 Masters though? Adam Scott’s putt and subsequent celebration on 18 was his eureka moment for about 15 minutes before Masters specialist Angel Cabrera stiffed his approach to force a play-off. I can still hear him and caddie talking to his ball.

Scott wasn’t to be denied though. Under the fading light and as the heavens began to open, the Aussie nailed another putt of similar length to clinch his first major and spark more wild celebrations. And who can forget those iconic winning pictures? Brilliant.

Mark: It had to take something special to get away from what happened to Rory in the 2011 Masters and we got it with Charl Schwartzel, Jason Day and Adam Scott. When Luke Donald chipped in at the 18th he (and we) thought it might be enough for some extra holes – in the end Schwartzel beat him by four.

Eight players had at least a share of the lead on that Sunday, Day birdied the last two for a 68, Scott led by two after a birdie at the 16th. But it was to be Schwartzel’s day; chipping in on the 1st, holing out for eagle at 3 and then making a birdie at each of the last four holes. Round in 66 on the 50th anniversary of comaptriot Gary Player’s first win at the Masters.
