‘Carnage!’ College championship abandoned over ‘worst conditions ever seen’

Watch the brutal footage as chaos erupted on the greens at Whistling Straits

There are few combinations more deadly in golf than rapid greens and brutal winds. Then chuck in poor pin positions, and throw these ingredients into one of the most difficult courses in major history, and suddenly you have an absolute recipe for disaster.

Well, that’s exactly what happened at Whistling Straits recently, as all these conditions crippled a college tournament so badly it had to be cancelled after just two days.

Staging the Whistling Straits 2022 College Championship, carnage erupted on the greens at the iconic PGA Championship and Ryder Cup venue, with scores rising as high as 16. SIXTEEN!

At this point you’re probably wondering how on earth that’s even possible. But fortunately for you guys, the ever reliable Ryan French of The Firepit Collective shared a snippet of the horror show on Twitter…

In what makes for uncomfortable viewing – and what no doubt left players traumatised – the footage shows this college star merely tapping his putt on one green at Whistling Straits, only to see his ball meander all the way back to the fairway. Crazy golf stuff.

Causing carnage no thanks to “bad winds” and “poorly placed pins”, scores rose as high as 16 on one hole during day two, leaving the hosts no choice but to cancel the tournament after just three holes.

At the time of cancellation, the leading score was six-over par, the average score was 20-over par, and the last placed golfer had slumped as high as 48-over par!

One onlooker who was at Whistling Straits, Chris Dohrer, later shared that conditions were the “worst I’ve ever seen”, with pins in completely “unfair” positions. Yikes.

Whistling Straits brutal greens

But if you thought that was chaotic, it’s not the first time something like this has happened this year. Back in May, similar chaos erupted at a state tournament in Iowa as competitors were left tormented by the “most unfair pin placement ever seen.”

So if you fancy watching some more carnage, you know where to head next.
