Amateur glory for Price and Cope at Woodhall Spa

Ludlow's Emily Price and Jack Cope, who plays out of the Players Club, are your 2020 Amateur champions

Emily Price and Jack Cope are the 2020 Amateur Championship winners.

Price came from behind to beat Lily May Humphreys 4&3 in Saturday’s 36-hole women’s final, while Cope edged out Callan Barrow by the same scoreline in the men’s equivalent on Sunday.

Both matches were played over the Hotchkin course at Woodhall Spa.

Price, who plays out of Ludlow, was made to work for her victory. She led for much of the first nine holes before Humphreys turned the match on its head. A birdie at 18 saw Price level matters going into the afternoon session.

It gave her the momentum and a par at the 19th was enough to take a lead she never relinquished.

When asked if that birdie on 18 was significant, Price replied: “Yes, 100%.

“To come in not 1-down and to hole a decent length birdie gave me momentum and positive energy.”

After being introduced as the 2020 English Women’s Amateur champion, she added: “It sounds amazing and feels even better.

“To come and take the win after a very long week is unbelievable and to perform the way I have is the best feeling you can ever get as a player.

“It’s been a few years since I won!”

For Humphreys, though, it was a second straight defeat in the final after losing to Ellen Hume in 2019.

Cope made slightly less hard work of his win. The Players Club’s star man took the lead with a birdie at the par-4 3rd hole and never looked back. He was 5-up through 18 holes, 6-up through 27 holes, and it was all over by the 33rd.

Cope joins the likes of Nick Faldo, Tommy Fleetwood, Danny Willett and Paul Casey on the trophy.

“It feels fantastic,” Cope, who had a spell away from the game after breaking an arm, said. “I’m very honoured to be alongside the names on the trophy.

“The last two years have been exceptionally tough on and off the golf course and I have to thank my parents, coach Russell Covey, and Gloucestershire County Union. I hope this is a big leap in the right direction.”
