Ali Taylor is a PGA Professional based at Lytham Golf Academy, and coaches at St Anne’s Old Links.
He joined our Pro down at the Shack to talk about the best ways to help maximise spin with your wedges..
Ali;
There are some big misconceptions out there as to what is the best way to get spin on your wedge shots.
What we tend to see is golfers putting the ball back in their stance, take their most lofted club and hit down on it. They do this because they think this will produce more spin.
For me that is counter intuitive because what’s happening here is that they are de lofting the club.
Technique-wise I want to see golfers have the ball a little bit more central and away from the back foot.
If they can feel as though the bounce of the club is simply bruising the grass as opposed to taking a big divot they will have a better angle of attack resulting in better wedge shots.
After a discussion with the Pro Ali gives us his three key points to help hit with maxing out your spin with the wedges..
1- Have a more control ball position
2- Create a shallower angle of attack
3- Use the correct loft with a premium golf ball
