Abacus is a Swedish golf apparel brand established over 30 years ago with a stated mission to make functional and smart clothing for the active golfer. The company has a new range of no less than seven styles of polo shirt out for 2023. One of these is the Monterey Drycool. How did it perform ? Read on to find out.

First Impressions
Out of the packet, this polo looked quietly stylish and smart. Granted, it’s not going to shout at you from the rail in the pro shop, but it’s none the worse for that. I tested the version in navy/fairway. ‘Fairway’ is the green trim you can see in the illustrations. There are currently four available colourways with more promised later in the season.
The beautifully soft and stretchy material is knitted in a melange yarn ; melange meaning a blend of slightly different colour shades. This wasn’t particularly noticeable in the navy tested here but does show more prominently on some of the other colours available. The 100% polyester construction offers wicking and breathable properties courtesy of Abacus’s Drycool fabric.
There is a contrasting dark tailored collar and a three-button closure in the placket. I really liked the subtle dashes of green on the sleeves, the buttons and the placket. All in all this looked and felt like a premium product. So how did perform on the course.
On The Course
I’m about 173 cm tall and weigh 74 kg with an average (ie non-athletic) shape. In polo shirts I vary between a medium and a large. I’m pleased to report that this medium size fitted just right. Abacus does describe this style as a regular fit and the fabric is nice and stretchy. So you’re unlikely to need to size up here. The length and fit of the sleeves suited me just right and the length of the garment itself ensured that it stayed tucked in even when I was reaching for extra yards of the tee.
This shirt was particularly comfortable next to the skin and to swing in. It fitted closely but there was no restriction when swinging and so it was an absolute pleasure to wear. The illustrations show me wearing this as a single layer. This is not representative of the use it has had in the generally chilly temperatures we’ve experienced so far this year. It fits seamlessly under combinations of midlayer, gilet and waterproof. The moisture wicking technology has ensured that I’ve remained cool and dry even under multiple layers, and I’m confident that this fabric will perform throughout the season.
I’ve worn this shirt about a dozen times. The easy care fabric washes well and there’s no need for ironing.
The 19th hole
I really enjoyed wearing this well-constructed and nicely tailored shirt. It will certainly be one of my go-to articles of clothing this season for golf. Although the branding is pretty subtle, I don’t think this is one that I’ll be wearing much away from the course. As it perform so well I’m sure that it will get plenty of on-course action. As I mentioned, this is just one of seven polo shirt styles brought out by Abacus this season. So there’s a lot to go at if you prefer a different look. For me , it suits just fine.
