Speed up your improvement with an external focus

Get past the stumbling block of over-thinking every golfing scenario with help from Premium Golf man and PGA Pro Alex Nicolson.

What we pay attention to can affect the technique we produce and whether skills are retained.

Golf tips: Where is the low point of my swing?

What does the average golfer think about during their golf swing?

Your shoulder turn? Keeping your left arm straight? The target? The shot shape? Is it consistent?

It’s obvious that as golfers we have a lot to focus upon when we take a shot.

Golf tips: Are you a slave to your setup?

We must remember that good concentration is the quality and direction of our focus.

So where should our attention be focussed?

It’s a difficult question to answer without hitting balls and observing, but the next time that you do, try and notice where your mind is focussed: be that on part of your body, the club, target or the ball.

Golf tips: Sequential learning and improvement

When we focus on our body movement, this is defined as ‘internal focus’.

Anything such as the club, target, ball etc. is defined as an ‘external focus’.

Unlike most other sports many golfers are more focussed on the internal rather than the external, whereas in football we would be focussed on the ball, we find ourselves focussed on how we will approach the ball in golf.

Golf tips: How learning skill can improve your golf

Which leads us to the question: Which is best? Internal or External?

The short answer is that both have their own merits when used in the correct manner and can aide your journey of learning and improvement.

In this video Alex will explain the external focus benefits as an option for golfers.
