They’re often seen as a good opportunity for birdie, but they can just as easily be your downfall if you’re not careful. Elite coach Dan Whittaker shares his strategy tips

One of the best PGA Tour stops is at Riviera and it’s famous par-4 10th hole weighing in at just 315 yards. And we all get a tinge of excitement on the tee of a short par 4, but should we go for it or lay up? A question all of us – pro or amateur – have to ask ourselves. So I’ve put together some tips in this video that I think will help you choose the best short par 4 strategy…

Short par 4 strategy: The main points

The best players in the world have such well-rounded games, but for the rest of us, it’s vital that we analyse where the hazards are and play to our strengths.

For example, if you’re more comfortable hitting a full 100-yard shot as opposed to a greenside pitch, then take that into consideration when making your decision.

The hole I’m on with with Andy is 290 yards with bunkers 35 to 40 yards short that shouldn’t be in play if he hits the driver. But is that the correct play for him?
