Justin Rose has had a wonderful golf swing throughout his 26 years as a professional. Winning multiple times across all tours, making it to world number 1 and winning a major championship has made it an incredible career so far, built on a near perfect technical golf swing. In the video below I dive into a Justin Rose swing analysis to see what makes it so good.

Set-Up

It all starts from a flawless set-up position. He is perfectly balanced; he stands the correct distance from the golf ball, his grip is neutral, and his posture is ideal. Golf is the only sport where we can choose exactly how we stand before we make a swing, and this is a good one to copy.

Rahm has an extremely weak left-hand grip, similar to the likes of Bryson DeChambeau, which helps him hit that power fade we have grown accustomed to. This grip forces Rahm to bow his wrist throughout the backswing which he is famous for.

Backswing

Rose starts his backswing off by moving his right knee back, which sets off his hip turn and shoulder turn. It’s great to see the knee move back early as it usually means there will be plenty of body turn throughout the whole backswing.

The butt end of Rose’s club moves down right at the start of the swing, which sets the club in motion moving up. This gets him in a position where the club is outside of his hands at the end of this takeaway.

Rose completes his backswing having turned his shoulders exactly 90 degrees to his spine, and turned around his initial spine angle. This is a huge key to great ball striking. He also stays very centred throughout his whole backswing.

Downswing

Rose starts down by shifting his hips across towards the target while lowering his arms. Doing these two things at the same time sequences his upper and lower body together, as he has struggled in the past with spinning his hips out too early.

He shallows the club out perfectly on plane, and maintains his wrist angles as he swings down into the golf ball.

Into The Finish

Post impact, Rose releases his hands, hips, chest and head through the ball into a perfectly balanced position. With his irons he often finishes in a position where he holds the club off, allowing him to play his higher spinning fade.

What can we learn?

Hard to critique any of the components in Rose’s swing, which is why he’s had such a successful, long career. These are the basics that I think golfers should work on copying.

  • Flawless set up
  • Turn in your angles on the way back
  • Dont rush your hip turn on the way down
  • Stay centred in the backswing, shift forwards in the downswing

You may not want to copy Justin Rose’s golf swing exactly, but watching his can help you understand your own more.

If you enjoyed this Justin Rose swing analysis, keep an eye out for more tour winners’ swing analysis in the future.

About the author

Callaway Epic Max driver review
Jack Backhouse

A member of the PGA for 13 years, Jack has lived golf for more than half his life. Inspired by Tiger Wood’s winning putt at the 2008 US Open, an obsession began with watching slow motion golf swings on the internet and reading What’s In The Bag articles in magazines.

Not destined for a life behind the desk in a pro shop, Jack has focussed more on coaching, working closely with regional teams in North Yorkshire and helping golfers of all levels on their journey to enjoying playing the game more. Jack has coached many junior golfers into the county teams, and once worked with a player at the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie.

After letting his game fall apart prior to COVID, Jack rediscovered his love for playing golf after joining Silloth Golf Club in 2020 and whipping round the windy, firm links course. Playing regularly with a half set of clubs he has a passion for shot making and developing skill, and claims to have the sharpest 30-100 yard game in the North of England (only because he doesn’t know anyone in the South), and now maintains a +1 handicap at a club much closer to home, Sand Moor GC.

Jack has always tinkered with his equipment, once building his own Frankenstein one length set of clubs after watching Bryson DeChambeau burst onto the scene after winning the US Amateur. He firmly believes in getting custom fit and is happy to debate anyone about blade irons being superior to any other iron category.

Jack loves: playing quickly, 2 ball golf, match play, heathland courses, pencil bags, foursomes, Tiger Wood’s swing 2005-2009.

Jack hates: buggies, unnecessary trees, giving shots, the 7 iron loft debate, graphite shaft lovers weird superiority complex.
