FootJoy HydroTour Jacket
The latest iteration of the HydroTour builds on the strengths of previous models.
The 3-layer fabric delivers strong waterproofing, breathability and windproofing features which makes it quite a warm jacket.
It offers 4-way stretch for ease of swinging. All zips are seam sealed. You get the benefit of DrySeal technology to the collar. Essentially this is an inner collar which sits closely and comfortable to the back of your neck whilst an outer collar allows water to drain away through some grommets (see picture carousel). It’s quite neat but you may well get more benefit from wearing a wide-brimmed rainhat.
I tested the version in medium in Niagara/Flint colourway which looked smart and stylish. The sizing was just about ok. If in doubt, size up. I’d regard this very much as a third layer to be worn over a polo and thin midlayer, because it is pretty insulating. I was pleased to see the underarm zip vents which are easy to operate and do really help to cool you down.
On the course, I could swing comfortably with no excess rustling or other noise. The two zippered pockets were fleece lined and a decent size. I also liked the internal left breast pocket. The DrySeal collar was easy to use and provided added comfort.

I have tested the jacket in showery conditions and, as you would expect, I remained dry and comfortable with no hint of water ingress.
If the rain stops and you want to stow your jacket, you will find that it takes up a bit of space when compared to a lighter weight rainjacket. And it is this slight lack of flexibility of use that prevents this jacket getting a full five stars.

This is a really well-designedwaterproof trouser from FootJoy.
It is lightweight, breathable and is waterproof enough with a rating of 20,000 mm.
There are four roomy pockets. The rear two pockets close with velcro. The front right-hand pocket has a zip allowing access to your trouser/shorts pocket beneath. There is a gripper waistband and belt loops/fly zipper which makes these a standalone pair of trousers.
On the course, they are easy to put on and off. They have stood up to showery weather with no problem and, when the rain stops and the sun comes out, they stow away very compactly.
They come in two colours and plenty of sizes, so you are sure to obtain a close fit.
At a very reasonable £135 RRP, and with a 3-year waterproof warranty, they come highly recommended.
This insulated gilet from FootJoy is the latest offering in the ThermoSeries range. As the name suggests, this is to keep you nice and warm, and first impressions are favourable.
I tested the version in Stone, which is really a pale cream. Although it’s perhaps not the most practical colour for poor weather golf, it does rather stand out, and different colours are available.
As you’d expect from a gilet, it is comfortable to wear on the course and offers lightweight warmth and wind resistance. There is a quilted front and upper back with very stretchy lower back and side panels. There is a full length zip closure and two handy zippered side pockets (which I’ll probably never use). On the inside, there is a snug fleece lining which adds to the sense of warmth.
I have used this as a third layer, over a polo and midlayer. And, for me, it doesn’t really lend itself to wearing beneath a waterproof as it is a little bulky. That’s also an issue if you’re taking it off mid-round because it’ll take up a bit of space in you winter bag.
It is a premium price, but my experience with FootJoy is that they make durable garments which are designed to last.
The midlayer is a staple garment for the avid golfer and this latest release from FootJoy, part of their ThermoSeries range, is a winner.
I have to say that when ThermoSeries first landed a few years ago, I was somewhat underwhelmed by the product. It was certainly good quality gear but didn’t offer outstanding warmth. This has all changed with the Jacquard midlayer which comes in a range of three colours.

I tested the version in Navy/Slate in medium. It looks smart and stylish and offers first class insulation thanks to the construction. The main body of the midlayer is made from a warm and quite thick material with a textured pattern. The upper back, shoulders and sleeves is made from a different more stretchy material (polyester/elastane). This produces a comfortable warm layer with excellent stretch properties.
I’ve tended to wear it over a polo shirt, and possibly beneath a gilet. I’ve not yet had to put a waterproof layer over this, but I think it would work better with a thin, shell type of waterproof.
At £95 RRP, I think it is reasonably priced, particularly as it is suitable for off course use as well.
This long sleeve base layer from FootJoy is constructed from a hexagonal pattern Jacquard polyester weave which provides excellent breathability and wicking.
The medium size fitted my non-athletic 74kg, 173 cm frame just right. The so-called ‘golf compression fit’ gave no great sense of compression, which for me, is a good thing, and there was certainly no restriction while swinging.
I felt that the neck could do with a slightly higher rise to improve heat retention, and the body felt to be a little on the short side. I like a base layer that stays tucked in.
Other than that, this ThermoSeries base layer performed really well and is particularly comfortable next to the skin, with no chafing from the lock stitch seam.
It comes in just one colour, a crisp white, and is suitable for a variety of cool weather outdoor activities.
The RainGrip glove from FootJoy is constructed from a micro-suede knit palm which offers a sure grip in rainy and/or humid conditions. The back of the glove is made from a quick drying knit material which provides stretch and breathability. The removable ball marker is a nice added touch.
There is a range of five sizes on offer in just one colour. The medium fitted me true to size. The angled velcro closure gives a secure fit, although the overall feel isn’t quite at the level of a premium leather glove.
The RainGrip is designed to work in the wet and it does that very well, providing excellent grip. It doesn’t do so well when the weather dries up so it shouldn’t be regarded as an all-weather glove.
I was pleased to see that it can be bought individually or as a pair (UK only) and, considering the performance and quality, it represents excellent value.
