Skechers is an American company founded in 1992. It’s actually the third largest footwear company in the world (behind Nike and Puma, before you ask) and they first made golf footwear in 2012. Hands free ‘slip-ins’ appeared as recently as 2023. Skechers shoes were worn by Matt Fitzpatrick when he won the US Open at Brookline in 2022 in the Go Golf Pro 5 Hyper.

Here we test the Skechers Go Golf Elite 6 model with an RRP of £125…

First Impressions

I hadn’t tested any Skechers before and had always regarded them as shoes very much for the golfer preferring comfort over performance. That bias should have been well and truly squashed when you consider that Matt Fitzpatrick was supported by Skechers when he played that incredible bunker shot on the 18th at Brookline to win the US Open in dramatic style.

But, out of the box, I was a little underwhelmed by the Go Golf Elite 6. I think that may be due to the colour supplied, which was charcoal (grey) at the front with contrasting black around the heel counter, with some flashes of red lettering and red eyelets. A brief look at the website shows that there are four colours available, and the supplied pair was just not to my liking.

These shoes are very much at the trainer’s end, design-wise. I didn’t particularly like the S (for Skechers) on the outer heel counter, nor the SKX or the various bits of writing on the inner aspect of the shoe.

Skechers call the material used for the upper ‘a lace-up mesh with an allover synthetic overlay’. It comes with a subtle honeycomb texture and looks very straightforward to care for. What I did particularly like about the shoe is that it looks and feels very well-padded. There is a very prominent heel piece, which Skechers call a ‘Heel Pillow’ to keep your foot securely anchored.

We are also promised an Arch Fit insole system with podiatrist-certified arch support as well as a podiatrist-designed shape of shoe. The sole comprises a multitude of TPU bars, ridges and cleats, and looks to offer plenty of traction and stability when it comes to grip. The laces are nice and thick , and are part of a well-organised lacing system.

This model is presented in four colours, and, as I’ve mentioned the supplied Charcoal is my least favourite. It certainly does not look as classy as the white, or white/navy options.

The UK size 7.5 (Euro 42) standard width fitted my usually sized 7.5 wide foot very comfortably out of the box. So I’d say that these shoes fit true to size. Skechers offer sizes from 6.5-12, including half sizes in this model, so you’re sure to find a perfect fit.

On Course Testing

Testing was carried out over two rounds in dry conditions on my home heathland course. The shoes were comfortable to wear straight out of the box, with good support around the ankle in particular. I wasn’t sure about the ‘Hands-free Slip-in’ technology but it worked a dream – my feet just slid in to position. I did have to bend over to do up the laces however, so I’m not sure that it’s such an advantage!

Skechers Go Golf Elite 6 golf shoe review

And I have to say that the famed Skechers comfort did not disappoint. The shoes were immediately comfortable due to the excellent lightweight padding offered by the whole of the shoe. The Heel Pillow, in particular, ensured that my foot was securely contained in position. I’m confident that I could play 36 holes in these shoes without a second thought – they are that comfortable.

The shoe gripped well on uneven lies and hitting out of fairway bunkers, so I was content with the performance of the sole. A minor point is that I do prefer a shoe with strong torsional rigidity, and the Skechers lacked a little in that department.

Other than that, I was impressed with the comfort and performance of the Go Golf Elite 6. I can’t tell you anything about wet-weather performance because it hasn’t rained in ages but Skechers offer a 12 month waterproof guarantee.

The 19th hole

Due to the sole design I think this is certainly a shoe that can easily be worn on and off the course and although I am personally not particularly fond of the appearance of the Go Golf Elite 6, I can see it appealing to a broad range of golfer.

And a brief look at the Skechers website will bring up over 30 options of golf shoe, including those worn by Matt Fitzpatrick, so you are sure to find a pair to suit your game. Alternatively you can check out the NCG Buyer’s Guide of Best Skechers golf shoes here.
