First Impressions

I have been aware of Stuburt but not owned a pair for many years. My impression was of functional shoes without outlandish designs. The Evolve Classic certainly fits into this mould. They were in the more modern, albeit conservative, style and looked a very comfortable shoe.

The website describes the various features of this shoe. It has an 80% leather and 20% mesh upper. It has perforations to aid breathability. They also describe a lacing and Sock-fit system which provides an extra layer of comfort and performance, more of which later. What really piqued my interest was the spikeless sole which has Sole-Lock technology. This features a traditional stitched welt and midsole. Welted shoes are usually a sign of quality and durability. I tested the black pair, but blue and white are also available.

On Course Testing

Trying these on they were immediately comfortable. The fit was good. That said, initially when I laced them up, it felt as if there was some elasticity to them. Having laced them up quite tightly there was pressure on my feet. I therefore had to loosen the laces to the point they were comfortable and tie them again without tightening them as one might on other shoes. This done, they were a very comfortable fit. I suspect this is what the Sock-fit system is, and I quite like the fact that you can get a really neat fit by adjusting the lace tension. Once laced, they were secure and supportive through a full swing and I did not need to re-tie my laces, which on some shoes can be a frequent and mildly irritating event.

I have not worn spikeless golf shoes for a very long time. There was plenty of traction on the sole and I did not have any issues with grip when I played. That said, I tested them in dry, sunny conditions so I cannot speak to their grip in wet conditions. On that point, they come with a one-year waterproof guarantee. So, while I would not set off in a storm with these shoes, if it were to rain it is reassuring to know they are waterproof.

The sole of this shoe is not as rigid as some. This means they are very comfortable and a great shoe off the course. I would probably not choose to wear them on a course with challenging terrain, particularly if wet.

The 19th hole

Overall I was impressed with this shoe. I am not sure what Stuburt’s intention is for this shoe. For me, this is an excellent second pair. Great for practising or a few casual holes. I would wear them for a full round if the conditions were favourable too. There’s a reason Stuburt have been around for a long time, they produce thoughtfully-constructed, quality gear. They have been off my radar for sometime but no longer. At an RRP of £84.99, I feel you are getting a lot of quality for your money.
