Draw biased drivers are a staple of driver releases in this age and there’s a good reason for that. The common miss for the majority of club golfers is out to the right and the new Callaway Quantum Max-D driver aims to put a stop to that.

Callaway has built a reputation for producing some of the quickest and most forgiving drivers in the game, and the new Quantum Max-D takes that sentiment even further.

Here’s a full review of the Callaway’s latest draw biased driver and why it may just fix your slice once and for all…

NCG Summary

NCG SUMMARY

If you are looking to counter a slice off the tee, then the Callaway Quantum Max-D driver is as good a remedy as any. Impressive ball speeds and a high launch make it an extremely effective draw bias driver.

They also offer a solid feel and all-round performance straight out of the box. No adjustment, no problem.

PROS

  • Extremely effective draw bias
  • Plenty of forgiveness
  • Easy to get airborne

First Impressions

At address, the Quantum Max-D looks reassuringly confidence-boosting. I think Callaway does a great job, on the whole, with their driver styling and they have carried that on here by setting this head up so that it clearly looks to help the ball move left, welcome news for slicers.

While it shares the same modern, futuristic design with that of the rest of the Quantum range, the Max-D keeps things pretty simple.

It has no adjustable rear weight because of the fact it is a draw bias driver. The overall shape and alignment do make it obvious what this club is built to do. I also admire a driver that does what it says on the tin, so let’s get into its performance.

NCG Verdict

Despite being the most forgiving model in the Quantum line, the Max-D is far from slow. My ball speed numbers hovered around the early 160s mph, which produced carry distances of over 280 yards.

That makes it the longest draw driver I’ve ever hit and are exceptional numbers for a draw-biased driver. Spin rates remained well controlled, helping shots launch high without ballooning excessively.

Interestingly, this was achieved without any custom loft or weighting adjustments, which shows just how well-optimised the head even right out of the out of the box.

The big stick to measure the quality of this driver by is the effectiveness in which it promotes a right to left ball flight. Well… it certainly is good at that.

I was hitting the ball so far left that it was recoding as 150ft offline on my trackman. I wasn’t changing anything in my swing either, the draw bias was just working its magic.

In terms of technology, the Max-D benefits from Callaway’s new multi-material face, combining titanium, poly mesh and carbon.

This allows the titanium layer to be thinner and flex more at impact, which increases ball speed while maintaining plenty of consistency across the face.

Final Thoughts

The Callaway Quantum Max-D is a standout option for golfers who need help fighting a slice but don’t want to give up distance. It’s fast, forgiving, and incredibly effective at promoting a high, left-biased ball flight.

Callaway Epic Max driver review
Jack Backhouse

A member of the PGA for 13 years, Jack has lived golf for more than half his life. Inspired by Tiger Wood’s winning putt at the 2008 US Open, an obsession began with watching slow motion golf swings on the internet and reading What’s In The Bag articles in magazines.

Not destined for a life behind the desk in a pro shop, Jack has focussed more on coaching, working closely with regional teams in North Yorkshire and helping golfers of all levels on their journey to enjoying playing the game more. Jack has coached many junior golfers into the county teams, and once worked with a player at the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie.

After letting his game fall apart prior to COVID, Jack rediscovered his love for playing golf after joining Silloth Golf Club in 2020 and whipping round the windy, firm links course. Playing regularly with a half set of clubs he has a passion for shot making and developing skill, and claims to have the sharpest 30-100 yard game in the North of England (only because he doesn’t know anyone in the South), and now maintains a +1 handicap at a club much closer to home, Sand Moor GC.

Jack has always tinkered with his equipment, once building his own Frankenstein one length set of clubs after watching Bryson DeChambeau burst onto the scene after winning the US Amateur. He firmly believes in getting custom fit and is happy to debate anyone about blade irons being superior to any other iron category.

Jack loves: playing quickly, 2 ball golf, match play, heathland courses, pencil bags, foursomes, Tiger Wood’s swing 2005-2009.

Jack hates: buggies, unnecessary trees, giving shots, the 7 iron loft debate, graphite shaft lovers weird superiority complex.
