How does the Under Armour Spieth Tour golf glove perform? Jonathan Taylor took one to the course to find out.
The Under Armour brand has a strong reputation for turning out good quality gear at reasonable prices across a range of sports. Jordan Spieth is their most famous ambassador with regard to golf gear.
Here we put under the microscope the golf glove attributed to the great man – with our Under Armour Spieth tour golf glove review. Read on to find out more…
I always quite like the idea of using the same equipment as our golfing heroes, so I was keen to test out a glove that was designed in collaboration with and worn by a multiple Major winner such as Jordan Spieth.
Of course, that all counts for nothing unless the product is of sufficient quality. The Spieth Tour is constructed from premium tour-level Cabretta leather. It is 0.35 – 0.45mm thick which is a bit thinner that the Under Armour Tour glove. As such, it promises exceptional feel and sensitivity. I can’t say that I was able to tell the difference between this and other top range gloves – my main concern was whether a thinner glove would prove to be less durable. After all, Jordan Spieth probably gets an unlimited supply of his glove- a luxury that is not afforded to you and me.
This model comes in just one colour – white with some black trim on the closure tab. The rubberised closure tab has a large logo and offers secure closure. The only other point of note was a small rubber tab with an ‘s’ on it at the base of the palm.
It comes in a choice of five sizes from S through to XL. The medium size fitted my medium hand just nicely. I’ve never really gone along with the advice to have as close a fitting glove as possible because, in my experience, a tight glove may tear across the back of the hand.
I’m not sure whether it’s because I have worn the Spieth Tour a bit more than the others, but it has shown more wear, specifically at the base of the palm and the mid-thumb, and also more discolouration than the other competitors on test. I wondered whether this might be because it is the thinnest of the gloves I have tested. Well I can’t answer that because I do not have a glove thickness measuring device. But I do have an excellent set of accurate scales, and so can tell you that this glove weighs 25gms. This is the same weight as one of the others on test and a full 5gm more (25%) than the third test glove.
So this was a little disappointing, because in all other areas the Spieth Tour performed admirably. The fit has remained close, and the glove breathes well. There has been virtually no rain in sunny Yorkshire for weeks so I can’t report on wet weather behaviour, but of course, this is not a wet weather glove.
To summarise, the Spieth Tour is a close fitting and stylish glove that is a pleasure to wear. I do have one or two concerns about the durability of this particular model, but I notice there are deals available on the Under Armour website (at the time of writing) which allow you to purchase this glove for under £12 which represents pretty good value for such a comfortable and well-designed glove.
