Si Woo Kim was inches away from this 67 million to one shot
It’s one of golf’s rarest occurrences for a reason – the odds calculated for an average golfer at an astronomical 67 million to one. But Si Woo Kim was only a burned cup away from achieving it at the Wyndham Championship.
We’re talking about two holes-in-one in the same round. Of course, the South Korean knows a thing or two about playing well at Sedgefield Country Club. He won this tournament back in 2016 and is in prime position to do it again after a third round 62 put him two shots clear at the top of the pile.
But what was already a memorable moving day round for him was nearly one for the ages.
The heroics started at the par 3 3rd – his high 8-iron one-hopping straight into the bottom of the cup.
And at the 197-yard 12th, with some very prescient commentary from CBS’s Jim Nantz, he very nearly repeated the trick – his ball landing, bouncing, rolling but then agonisingly lipping out of the hole.
He couldn’t quite believe it, and neither could we.
The last player to make two aces in a single round was Brian Harman, five years ago, at The Barclays and Si Woo Kim just missed out on joining a very exclusive club that also includes amateur Bill Whedon (1955 Insurance City Open) and Yusaku Miyazato (2006 Barracuda Championship).
“So I just hit it and then the ball goes just right at the pin,” he said of his perfect shot. “That would be good, if number’s good, that would be good. I’m not expecting that ace, but some guys yelling me and I feel like just tap-in really close and some TV guys told me that’s ace and I was so excited.”
On his near miss, he even admitted he expected it “a little” but was pleased to have made the birdie on a “tough hole”.
Kim went on to finish T3 – three shots behind winner Jim Herman.
