When Ryan Palmer overshot the par-3 14th green at Riviera on Saturday he will have been eyeing up a sand save. He arrived on the 15th tee with a nine.
What happened was this which Palmer described as follows: “Fatted it up there. It stayed (near the lip). Somehow. Came down. Fatted it. Stayed, somehow. Tried to hit it each time. Came down in a footprint, chopped it out and two-putted.”
The ‘poor guy’ actually needed six shots to escape the sand.
This poor guy… took 5 just to get out of the trap. #badbreak #twoinchesbehindtheball #GenesisInvitational #RyanPalmer #PGATour pic.twitter.com/wy3XT624Nt

Two putts from 11 feet followed and a sextuple-bogey made its way onto the card.
In the locker room after his 10-over 81 which also included an eagle and two birdies, Palmer said: “I hit it nine times. Anything else? Is it a record or something?”
On the Sunday needless to say Palmer made a birdie two.
