They’ve taken it too far this time – it’s a real shame

With rules and course set-up controversies raging, equipment editor James Savage takes a light-hearted look at the other big stories from Saturday's third round

Nike golf shoes, and sometimes clothing, always seems to go to the edge at major championships.

But after seeing Brooks Koepka’s shoes on Saturday, I think they’ve gone over it this time.

Nike golf shoes have always been kind to me – great comfort and stability – but I’m just not sure where they are going any more. It’s a real shame.

I don’t know where to start with these. But if you’re reading this Nike, I’ll happily test a pair out to give them their dues.

Rose summons the spirit of Merion

Who can forget the 72nd hole at Merion in 2013 where Justin Rose fired his second shot over the pin before nearly holing for birdie with his 3-wood from the fringe?

It makes you wonder why players don’t pull fairway woods out when around the greens more often.

And when Rose grabbed the 3-wood from the fringe on his third hole no one was surprised to see it find the back of the cup.

Stricker didn’t get the new driver memo

We’ve been bleating on about the new Titleist TS drivers all week.

Rafa Cabrera Bello TS drivers

All the cool kids like Justin Thomas, Rafa Cabrera Bello and Jimmy Walker have been using them at Shinnecock Hills.

Unfortunately it seems poor old Steve Stricker got left out of the WhatsApp group.

The 51-year-old was left to battle his way around with a six-year-old Titleist 913 driver.

But that’s now a record 27 consecutive cuts made at major championships so I’m sure he’ll be able to buy one of the new TS drivers when they come on sale.

Hatton showing off new Ping irons

Tyrrell Hatton Ping 3-iron

The Englishman has been grinding hard and has already secured his best-ever US Open finish whatever happens.

And he’s done it with the new Ping i210 irons plus a mystery 3-iron which he’s using here.

We’ll have all the details over the coming weeks.

Nice shirt, Webb

What a lovely looking FootJoy polo Webb Simpson was seen sporting on Saturday.

Webb Simpson

I’m sure I’ve seen it somewhere before though…

FootJoy polo

Yep, in my wardrobe. We know Simpson is a big fan of the NCG YouTube channel so as well as picking up equipment and instruction tips, he’s clearly seeking fashion advice too.
