Every golfer would love to walk the fairways of the Dunluce Links, but how light would your wallet be after handing over the green fee?

Golf fans can’t wait to see Royal Portrush back on their screens at The Open Championship in 2025.

It first hosted The Open in 1951 when Max Faulkner hoisted the Claret Jug, then the venue returned to the rota in 2019. Shane Lowry remarkably won in front of a home crowd.

Having led by four shots to his friend and Ryder Cup teammate Tommy Fleetwood after 54 holes, Lowry went on to win his sole major thus far by a huge six-shot margin. That was the widest victory since Louis Oosthuizen won by seven shots in 2010.

After he missed the cut in devastating fashion, Rory McIlroy will want to right the wrongs six years later. He won the Masters in April and will need no motivation to go for his second Open title.

The Northern Irish beauty has the Dunluce and the Valley courses, and the Dunluce is the one that is used for the game’s oldest major. Royal Portrush was founded as the County Club in 1888, and in 1889, Old Tom Morris was drafted in to create a new layout.

It became the Royal County Club in 1892 and gained its present name under the patronage of the Prince of Wales in 1895. Harry Colt was behind the layout of the Dunluce Links that opened in 1933.

Among many highlights on this magnificent golf course is the par-3 16th hole, aptly named Calamity Corner. At 236 yards, it is played over a large ravine and, although there are no bunkers, the uphill tee shot is quite intimidating.

The championship quality of the golf course is the main reason why not only The Open is back there, but why so many people want to play it and why so many more will be foaming at the mouth following this year’s tournament.
