What’s the most fun golf course you’ve ever played?

A simple question requires a simple – but very important – answer

best opening tee shot in golf

We all like a challenge, but ultimately we play golf to enjoy ourselves. Fun golf courses can be few and far between, so in this edition of Fourball the NCG team pick out their favourites…

Dan: Such a hard question to answer. Painswick, North Berwick, Royal Dornoch, Bude, Brancaster, the Old Course, The Machrie, Elie, Machrihanish, Machrihanish Dunes, Prestwick, Cruit Island – I could go with any of them. Fun to me involves short par 4s, cute par 3s, funky green complexes with run-offs rather than bunkers, a sporting breeze and firm ground. Give me those factors and then come and pick me up two-and-a-half hours later.

Alex: I think you know where I’m going with this. Take a trip down the so-called Atlantic Highway and take in Royal North Devon, either of the Saunton courses, Bude, St Enodoc, Perranporth, West Cornwall and Mullion and you’re guaranteed fun. These courses are also all filed under my happy place.

Steve: Tee shots over the beach, blind par 3s, double plateaued greens, a course that makes you think but still lets you go through the bag, I came off grinning like a Cheshire and wishing there was more daylight. There were birdies and blobs but it was never boring. It can only be North Berwick.

Hannah: There is just something unique about the whole atmosphere at the Old Course. Links golf gives you a chance to be more creative and play different types of shots, especially around the expansive greens. Even better if there are still some pork pies left at the halfway house van.

So, what’s the most fun golf course you’ve ever played? Let us know in the comments below or you can tweet us.
