TravisMathew Men’s Beck Shorts

4.5 star review

Reviewed by Paul Miller

Let me first confess I am a big TravisMathew fan. I love the quality and versatility of the brand whereby you can easily wear the items on and off the course.

When it comes to shorts I have struggled to find a pair that are either too baggy or way too tight! Admittedly this is more down to my short (I am 5ft 10) and stocky build.

I would say these TravisMathew Beck shorts fit more into the baggy category. They are also on the longer side, 9.5 inch inseam, which for some might be a bit long. I am normally a 40 waist and I think I might have been okay in a 38 – just something to bare in mind as you might be okay sizing down.

I absolutely loved the feel of the shorts – the stretch and comfort were spot on. I had no issues whilst swinging the club or walking between shots.

The big plus for these shorts, for me anyway, were when bending down to put the tee in the ground or to line up putting. Whereas a chino type short can sometimes feel a bit tight when bending, these shorts do not have any such issues. The lightweight stretch fabric provides ease of movement in any direction.

The Beck shorts have 2 deep back pockets and 2 deep front pockets that are ideal for what ever you need to carry.

The only thing missing on these shorts are a silicon gripper inside the waistband to keep your polo shirt in place whilst swinging.

All in all these are a quality item that is true to the TravisMathew brand of producing items you can easily wear on and off the golf course. I can see them getting a lot of use over the Summer whether teeing it up, umpiring at kids cricket, or having a few drinks in a beer garden! A great all round short for all occasions.

PROS

  • Lightweight
  • Stretchy
  • Versatile

CONS

  • No silicon gripper inside the waistband

RRP – £69.99

SIZES: Waist 30-42

COLOUR: Blue Nights / Black / Light Grey / Blue / Vintage Indigo

Ping Bradley Performance Shorts

4.5 star review

Reviewed by Matt Coles

Let’s face it, you want (and need) a good pair of shorts to wear on the golf course during the summer months.

The Ping Bradley Performance Short provides a great option for golfers looking to expand their summer wardrobe.

Made from 100% polyester, the Bradley Performance Shorts are stretchy and comfortable, and with four big pockets, golfers can carry everything they need, from balls and tees, to gloves, scorecards and mobile phones. They fit very nicely as well.

To add to the good points of the Bradley Performance Short, there are more than ten colours available meaning there is always an option to match with an outfit you like.

The only downside is that at £60, you will be able to find golf shorts for much cheaper than this. However, you might struggle to find more comfortable shorts…

PROS

  • Comfortable
  • Stylish
  • Deep pockets
  • Range of colours and sizes

CONS

  • Price

RRP – £60

SIZES: Waist 30-40

COLOUR: Black / White / Navy / Clay / Dark Mineral / Pearl Grey / Infinity Blue Marl / Poppy Marl / Ceramic Marl / Coronet Blue Marl / Beet Red Marl / Tangerine Marl

FootJoy Peformance Regular Fit Shorts

4 star review
best golf shorts

Reviewed by Paul Miller

I have never really worn FootJoy apparel before but I was a big fan of the Performance Trousers. I was therefore keen to get the shorts on and see if another FootJoy item would make its way into my golfing wardrobe.

I am 5ft 10, stocky build and 40 inch waist for trousers and shorts. I generally like trousers/shorts that are not tight, give a little extra room and can be tightened up with a belt.

With this being said, similar to the trousers, the FootJoy fit for me was generous but comfortable. I would even say a 38 might have been fine. So, for some, sizing down might be appropriate.

Normally shorts are tight on my legs but as you can see from the picture there was plenty of room and great breathability with these shorts. It is rare that shorts provide this much room for me and so made a welcome change!

The stretch and comfort were great and with the silicon gripper inside the waistband keeping your polo shirt in place, these shorts will indeed be added to my golfing wardrobe.

PROS

  • Breathable
  • Stretchy
  • Comfortable

CONS

  • Might need to check sizing

RRP – £59.99

SIZES: Waist 30-42

COLOUR: Navy / Black / Grey / Khaki / White

Oscar Jacobson Dunbar Shorts

4.5 star review
best golf shorts

Reviewed by Tom Bullough

Oscar Jacobson have a fantastic reputation for their stylish, durable golf apparel, these Dunbar shorts being a great example.

They are extremely comfortable and an excellent fit. They sit nicely on your legs whilst offering ample stretch for all movements required on the golf course.

A personal preference of mine which is well met in these shorts, is sufficient pocket space across the front and back of the garment, they offer plenty of space to be able to carry everything required for a day out on the golf course.

The styling of these certainly adds a bit of character to your look, bold patterning spread across the entire garment make them fairly noticeable. However, with three colour ways available there is plenty of variety to suit whatever look you’re going for.

This particular style of shorts may not be for everyone, but for those that prefer it, I can definitely vouch for the comfort and practicality of them and would recommend them for your summer golf wardrobe.

PROS

  • Comfortable
  • Lots of pocket space
  • Not your usual design, so something different

CONS

  • Styling may not be for everyone

RRP – £69.99

SIZES: Waist 30-42

COLOUR: Navy / Elemental / Lunar Grey

Adidas Ultimate365 8.5 Inch Golf Shorts

4.5 star review
best golf shorts

Reviewed by Jack Backhouse

A good pair of shorts is an essential part of the spring summer wardrobe.

These shorts fit me well (30-inch waist) and are the right amount of ‘athletic fit’ around the thighs.

The shorts are extremely light and breathable and stretch as I squat down to mark and line up my ball; they also dry extremely quickly after a sharp shower, so comfort levels stay high throughout the round.

I like the Adidas grip tape around the waist to keep your shirt tucked in, my shirt slips out a lot being an awkward shape so this feature keeps me looking smart throughout the day.

The Adidas Ultimate365 8.5-inch golf shorts come in a whopping 10 different colours – Olive Strata currently at a reduced price of £29.95 – so there is something to match all your outfit choices, you will not need any other shorts once you own this pair.

PROS

  • Great fit
  • Plenty of colour options
  • Light and comfy

CONS

  • Not warm in the wind!

RRP£45 – Olive Strata £29.95

Sizes: Waist 28-44

Colours: Black/Collegiate Navy/Grey Three/Hemp/Olive Strata/Silver Pebble/Crystal Jade/Semi Blue Burst/Preloved Scarlet/Semi Spark

Stuburt Urban II Shorts

4 star review
best golf shorts

Reviewed by Tom Bullough

Here we take a look at the Stuburt Urban II shorts (Royal). Built with 96% polyester and 4% elastane the full range of movement was excellent, there was no concern in bending down to read putts or any funky leg positions when in trouble (sigh).

This royal blue colourway slightly on the ‘loud side’ for my usual preference, however with a further three colourways available in some more staple colours this would be more preference than a criticism.

When purchasing bottom half golf wear it is important for plenty of pocket space to carry all things required which these shorts offer plenty of via large front and back pockets.

The shorts don’t label themselves as slim-fit, however my one concern was how tight they did fit to my legs. I would say I am a very standard XL top half and 34/32 bottom half across all my clothes but they felt very tight to my legs despite the waist fitting normally.

PROS

  • Clean look
  • Excellent pocket space
  • Good colour choice

CONS

  • Tight fitting around the legs

RRP – £39.99

SIZES: Waist 30-42

COLOUR: Slate Grey / Royal / Black / French Navy

Farah Jester Shorts

4 star review
best golf shorts

Reviewed by Tom Bullough

Farah may not have the largest of golf apparel reputations, but their recent Summer 24 drop perhaps suggests they deserve some more kudos in this space.

Their drop includes a wide variety of summer garments, but here I take a look at the Farah Jester Shorts (Blue, Grey). Admittedly I didn’t like the look of the shorts at first glance, this is purely because I tend to keep my golf outfits fairly bland so the light blue didn’t really click with me.

However, after testing the shorts I really turned a corner with them. I thought they looked great out on the course, a perfect summer addition for UK summer golfing or if you’re heading abroad for some golf.

Practicality wise they were excellent, ample storage through the front and back pockets and no problem with any mobility required for a round of golf. There is also some nice added detail of branded inner grips to the waistband to add to the comfort and practicality of the garment.

Overall a really good pair of shorts, perhaps best placed in the height of summer or abroad, but will definitely get use.

PROS

  • Great fit
  • Comfortable
  • Excellent summer golf attire

CONS

  • Colour may not be for everyone

RRP – £55

SIZES: Waist 30-40

COLOUR: Black / Farah Blue Grey / Regatta Blue

Abacus Kildare Shorts

Reviewed by Jonathan Taylor

Abacus is a Swedish golf apparel brand established over 30 years ago with a stated mission to make functional and smart clothing for the active golfer.

As well as providing us with a range of weather-resistant jackets and layers for the upper body, Abacus also supplies a vast range of legwear to keep you comfortable whether you are golfing in the Arctic Circle or a tropical rainforest.

The Kildare shorts are constructed from a lightweight 92% polyester and 8% Spandex (offering 4-way stretch) weave which offers breathable and wicking qualities.

I tested the version in navy which is one of just two colours currently available. I’d have liked to see a few more options but the Abacus way is to release further colours through the season. The 32 in waist fitted my 32 waist very comfortably. The fit really is excellent. The length of the inseam at 23 cm suited my modest height perfectly but if you’re over 182cm (6ft) they may just run a little short.

There are 2 front and two rear pockets. The usual Abacus logos are absent. There is just a little tab at the top of the front right pocket, which I thought looked neat.

I’ve only worn these shorts for a few holes (it’s been grim up North) but they performed perfectly well and I am sure that they will be a staple during the forthcoming season.

PROS

  • Excellent fit
  • Lightweight
  • Premium construction

CONS

  • Limited colour options

Colours: Clam / Navy
