European Tour schedule

Should the European Tour schedule include a break?

To break or not to break? Two of our writers slug it out over whether this is the time of year for the European Tour to shut things down

It’s that time of year when some of us have had enough while some of us still can’t get enough of the Euroepean Tour schedule. We put both sides of the argument in this week’s Alternate Shot…

‘That sort of lifestyle will undoubtedly take its toll on mental and physical wellbeing’

The idea that there isn’t a break between season’s on the European Tour is pretty ludicrous to me, writes Joe Hughes. Everybody needs a break and, as Jon Rahm emphasised after his victory in Dubai, rest is key. He had a month without picking up a club before stepping out and winning the biggest first prize in golf.
There has been plenty of chat about the strength of the fields on the tour, particularly highlighting that many of the big names choose to skip some events, even those that have prize funds north of $5 million.
One way for the European Tour to perhaps improve this situation is to give their players the end of the year off.  From this point of the year until the new year don’t stage any events and see how this impacts the fields in the new year. I’d bet there’ll be plenty champing at the bit to get back to it.
At the end of the day the players are athletes who are travelling the globe week in, week out and to think players should, could or would want to do this 12 months a year is wide of the mark.
That sort of lifestyle will undoubtedly take its toll on mental and physical wellbeing. Bring in a break, I say.

‘Now we can sit back a little and enjoy the beginnings of some nice storylines’

In relative terms very few players have featured much on the European Tour for the past month. We had 75 players in Turkey, 63 at the Nedbank and then 50 in Dubai, writes Mark Townsend.

Now the Q School graduates will get a chance to get their new lives off to a flying start and what a place to do it at Leopard Creek. Most of us need some blue skies to help raise the serotonin levels at this time of year and keep the interest levels simmering away.

This year the middle of the season was quite a lot to take in, with majors, fifth majors and WGCs coming at us from every angle, now we can sit back a little and enjoy the beginnings of some nice storylines. Think what Oliver Wilson might not have achieved if things had just shut down until Christmas – he had missed out on a European Tour card but then lit the blue touch paper with his efforts at this time of year.

Come the new year he had a place in the Open at Portrush and was well on his way to securing his privileges for this new season.

If anything I’d like more of a mid-season break rather than cooling the jets in December.

Been watching and playing golf since the early 80s and generally still stuck in this period. Huge fan of all things Robert Rock, less so white belts. Handicap of 8, fragile mind and short game
