Unstoppable Nelly Korda wins second major at Chevron Championship

Nelly Korda became just the third LPGA Tour player since 1978 to win five consecutive titles as she secured her second major triumph in Texas

Nelly Korda‘s dominance of the LPGA Tour didn’t relent on Sunday in Texas as she won the Chevron Championship.

The American became just the third player since 1978 to win five consecutive LPGA Tour titles and she is now a two-time major champion thanks to a final-round 69 at the Woodlands in Texas.

Following up on her win at the 2021 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, Korda is now the ninth player in LPGA Tour history to win at least both the Women’s PGA and The Chevron.

The 25-year-old began the last round one shot behind 54-hole leader Haeran Ryu but after leapfrogging the field to lead by three at the turn, she sealed victory by two shots from Swede Maja Stark with a 72nd-hole birdie.

“It’s just been a crazy, crazy, crazy couple of weeks, with some really solid golf. I can finally breathe,” she said having just jumped in the lake, celebrating her 13th LPGA Tour win.

Nelly Korda: Chevron Championship just another string to the American’s bow

“I was really nervous on that back nine. I really, really wanted this win. It feels amazing to get it.

“My first-ever major, competing in a major, was at the US Women’s Open at Sebonack, and that was when I dreamt of winning major championships. To have two under my belt now is a dream come true.

“I’m going to enjoy this right now, and then I’ll think about that,” she added. “It’s been an amazing time. Hopefully, I’ll keep the streak alive. But I’ve been so grateful to compete week in and week out and get the five in a row.”

After winning the LPGA Drive on Championship in January, the Fir Hills Seri Pak Championship in March, the Ford Championship in March, the T-Mobile Match Play in April and now this, Korda has stamped her authority on the LPGA Tour in historic fashion.

The World No.1 finished the final seven holes of her third round on Sunday morning, after dangerous weather had suspended play on Saturday, to trail Ryu by a single shot. Birdies on holes 3, 4 and 8 took her to 13-under-par, but she made her first bogey since Friday on the 11th hole.

Despite the effort of Stark, Laura Coughlin and Brooke Henderson, Korda sealed the deal by almost holing her tee shot on the par-3 17th hole and nestling a birdie on the par-5 18th to secure the Dinah Shore trophy.

Korda notably didn’t have to contend with defending champion Lilia Vu after she withdrew before the first round and Angel Yin who withdrew following the second round. This was the pair that contended the playoff for the Chevron Championship 12 months ago.

Nonetheless, Korda is down to play in the JM Eagle LA Championship in pursuit of a sixth consecutive trophy and something even Annika Sorenstam and Nancy Lopez couldn’t manage.
