First Impressions
You really can tell a high quality golf jacket from a cheap, flimsy one. You’ll get odd people coming out saying ‘as long as it’s waterproof, it’ll do’. But if you’ve read any of my past reviews, investments are rewarded in the world of golf apparel.
Stuburt have constructed this waterproof golf jacket with a modern design that is perfect for the winter golfer. Allow me to explain…
It’s got taped seams for total rain protection, fleece lined pockets and inner neck, and a half-zip design to keep as much rain out as possible.
The material is also lightweight, so if the April showers make their usual appearance early next year, it can be easily packed away again afterwards so it’s ready for the winter.
If you’re shopping for this product online, take note of waterproof ratings. A jacket’s overall measure of how waterproof it is will be a large number followed by ‘MM’. This jacket comes in at 5000MM, which is more than enough for walking in the rain and playing golf in. In fact, hikers who find themselves up mountains will wear jackets with 5000MM or higher, so you’re getting a solid piece of kit here.
To put that into a bit more context, 5000MM, or 5 metres, is how far you could fill the jacket before it would start to leak through the fabric. So just picture yourself standing on the course in the rain until 5000MM of rain fell on the jacket before you get wet.
On Course Testing
I tested this in ideal conditions; November rain with a cold breeze blowing in my face. When it’s cold, my face is the first part of my body to suffer, so here are the best golf snoods out there in case that’s a problem for you as well. I layered it up over a base layer and polo shirt, which is essential, as waterproof jackets aren’t designed for thermal protection, unlike pieces such as the Callaway Premium Puffer Vest.
The jacket made short work of the rainy conditions. Its 100% polyester shell makes the rain droplets bounce off its exterior, so your movements won’t be carrying the extra weight of the water, even if it does bucket it down.
It does offer a limited amount of thermal protection, and a bit more than other waterproof jackets on the market. It’d be a wise idea to put on an extra pair of layers underneath this jacket when the temperatures plummet, though.
I did miss the hood, though. Some people don’t always have the luxury of an umbrella holder in their bag or a buggy, so such a simple addition to the coat seems a small request that would add a different dimension to the jacket and its waterproof capabilities.
The 19th hole
We hate rain the most out of any weather conditions, so any type of kit that protects you against the rain is a win, in my view.
I’d absolutely consider wearing this jacket off the course. And that’s not to say that I’d just chuck it on without a thought if it starts raining just before I head out. I want to wear this jacket because it looks good and does its job well.
Anyway, where’s that rain when you need it?
