Best Golf Mid Layers 2024

The best of the best! We roundup the best men’s golf mid layers in 2024

As we move from winter to spring and summer a good mid layer is a great item to have in order to navigate the inconsistent weather in the UK!

In this 2024 buying guide for the best mid-layers, we’ve compiled first-hand reviews of some of the latest options available. Whether you prefer brands like FootJoy, Puma, Ping or Callaway, we’ve got options to suit most tastes.

What the NCG team have done this year is put to the test the main brands you would expect to be listed but also some you might never have heard of. All we ask is that you take a look at the items below and either stay with what you know or break the mould and potentially try something new.

When it comes to choosing a good mid-layer, several factors to consider are comfort, fit, fabric, breathability, price, and, of course, style.

We’ve gathered a selection of top-quality men’s mid-layers that hopefully tick these boxes.

Best Golf Mid Layers 2024

Callaway Long Sleeve Trademark Chev Block Pullover In Peacoat

5 star review

Reviewed by Gillon Fabbroni

The, not exactly concisely-titled, Long Sleeve Trademark Chev Block Pullover in Peacoat is a golf top that fills the gap between wearing a golf shirt and and having a full-blown insulating top.

It is made from 60% polyester, 30% recycled polyester, and 10% elastane. It incorporates the Swing Tech TM technology band, and I found there to be no restriction when swinging.

The material is very soft and extremely comfortable. It has a quarter zip and a pattern of Callaway logos on the front, which adds a bit of interest. The material also has Aquapel technology, which repels liquids.

In most brands, I take XXL, and this XXL was spot on fit-wise for me. This top is light and while it is not something that I would wear if it was very cold, it is perfect for cooler days. In the summer this is ideal for early or later in the day when it is a little cool.

It could also be worn when cold as an additional layer and that makes it a very versatile piece of kit. I absolutely loved this top and it will be a staple of my golf kit from now on.

PROS

  • Light and extremly comfortable
  • No restriction when swinging
  • Versatile
  • Machine Washable

CONS

  • Only available in one style/colour

RRP – £70

SIZES: S-2XL

COLOUR: Peacoat

Puma Pure Colourblock Quarter Zip

5 star review

Reviewed by Matt Chivers

Much like the Cloudspun Camo Hoodie, I liked the lightweight nature of this Puma Pure Colourblock Quarter Zip.

When I slipped this on, it did not burden my swing or my freedom of movement. To me, it is important for long layers to be breathable and free when you play golf, and this is why I was so pleased with this item.

The colour is great too. The Black-Aqua Blue design is very appealing to me, and I imagine it will also appeal to many other golfers. This colour design will definitely catch the eye of golfers who want to inject some variety into their wardrobe as they up the ante on the golf course in the Spring and the Summer.

It might be a minor characteristic of the item, but the zip that goes up to the bottom of the neck is not too suffocating either, adding to its comfort.

This is a piece of clothing people will look forward to wearing as the evenings become brighter and it is honestly difficult to pick out a negative with it.

Perhaps some golfers will choose a different colourway, but I was very pleased with the comfort, design and lightweight feel of this Quarter Zip.

PROS

  • Colour and design are attractive
  • Light and breathable
  • Reasonably priced

CONS

  • Might not like this particular colour

RRP – £55

SIZES: S-2XL

COLOUR: Ash Gray-Deep Navy / Black-Aqua Blue / Deep Navy-Melon Punch / Vine-Deep Navy

Oscar Jacobson Winwood Half Zip Sweater

5 star review

Reviewed by Tom Bullough

The Oscar Jacobson Winwood half-zip sweater is also in contention for one of my favourite 2024 releases.

OJ has a strong reputation for its on- and off-course apparel, and garments like this prove exactly why.

The Winwood half zip is built with 100% cotton and a deep ribbed neck collar for maximum comfort, which I can certainly vouch for. The fit of the garment is a nice balance between slim and loose. It allows for full mobility on your golf swing while looking really smart on and off the golf course.

As a mid-layer, it may not be the solution for those particularly chilly rounds of golf, but it is built to be breathable, so it would be much more suited to a twilight round of golf to keep the edge off, or just a general smart addition for your golfing wardrobe.

Overall, it’s a really good product. It looks terrific with different colourway options for all, is a smart fit, and is practical for a round of golf. I would certainly recommend it. The ideal sweater for golfers moving from winter into spring/summer.

PROS

  • On and off-course usage
  • Lightweight
  • Smart design

CONS

  • Expensive

RRP – £99.99

SIZES: S-2XL

COLOUR: Navy / Pewter Marl / Grey Marl / China Blue

Stuburt Tawny Knitted Sweater

4 star review

Reviewed by Tom Bullough

Part of Stubert’s spring-summer release is the Tawny knitted sweater. My first impression was very positive: lightweight, smart and a good mid-layer option this summer.

I tested the Khaki version of this garment (also available in French navy and droplet marl), which isn’t usually a colour I reach for off the clothing rack, but I did really like how it looked once on.

A smart inclusion is the waterproof front zipper to offer some protection around those showery days.

The general design is really clean, with only subtle branding on the upper right sleeve it looks stylish both on and off the golf course.

My only small critique is that I prefer my outer layers to sit slightly longer over my belt line. This is by no means a criticism, as it does fit nicely; it’s just something to consider if you prefer it slightly longer.

PROS

  • Lightweight
  • Smart
  • On & off-course suitable

CONS

  • Might be a bit short for some

RRP – £49.99 – currently some good deals to be had on Amazon

SIZES: S-3XL

COLOUR: French Navy / Khaki / Droplet Marl

Farah Conley Mid-Layer

4 star review

Reviewed by Tom Bullough

Another impressive release from Farah in their 2024 Summer collection is the Conley quarter zip.

This is a really smart-looking item. It has a clean finish and two small branding areas: the Farah logo on the middle left chest area and below the collar on the back. I tested the regatta blue version, but there are another three colour ways available, all of which look equally smart for on- and off-course requirements.

The material has a noticeable quality that is recognised as soon as you pick it up. It is extremely comfortable to wear and a great option for those slightly cooler days.

Despite being slightly thicker, it still offers good freedom of movement for all that is required on the golf course.

My only small critique would be the fact that I am a pretty safe bet for an XL sized upper garment, however the XL version of this Conley ¼ zip did sit very short across my waist. I would suggest opting for a size up for a more comfortable fit.

PROS

  • Really smart
  • Suitable for on & off course
  • Good price point – currently 29% off

CONS

  • Short fit

RRP – £69.95 – reduced to £49.99 – whilst stock lasts

SIZES: S-2XL

COLOUR: Dark Shadow / Dusky Blue / Farah Teal / Regatta Blue

Puma Cloudspun Camo Hoodie

5 star review

Reviewed by Matt Chivers

The Puma Cloudspun Camo Hoodie was very impressive.

As soon as I slipped it on, I knew it was a good fit and it didn’t even feel like I had another layer on because it was so light.

Golf hoodies have grown on me from the moment they broke through in the professional game and this Puma hoodie makes you feel at home. It is comfortable and light, and the black design makes it suitable for both on the course and off the course settings.

With a golf club in your hands, you have freedom of movement in this hoodie. The fabric is breathable and although it is not a baggy fit, I felt a lot of space around my chest which is what you need when swinging a golf club with a top player.

The hood is not heavy down your back and in terms of the design, the pattern going across the front at the top of the chest is simplistic and stylish. Puma has not tried to do too much with the design which I think a lot of golfers will appreciate.

As well as being a top-quality hoodie, I don’t think Puma is asking too much with the price tag of £60 either.

PROS

  • Breathable and light
  • Simple design
  • Reasonably priced

CONS

  • Might be too informal for some golfers

RRP – £60

SIZES: S-XL

COLOUR: Deep Navy / Black / White

Ping Keon Block Fleece

4 star review

Reviewed by Matt Coles

It might be coming towards the summer, but we all know that in the UK, you still need to have good quality outerwear for when the wind and rain inevitably appear.

The Ping Keon Block Fleece offers that protection, thanks to being fleece-lined, while it remains lightweight and comfortable, allowing for a range of movement.

There is Ping branding on both the waist hem and the sleeve hems, the latter of which are good for those that like to pull their sleeves up while they are playing shots, as the elasticated hem stays where you pull it up to on your arm.

As an outer layer, the Ping Keon Block Fleece is a good option, and at £80, it is also well priced compared to other major clothing brands. It also comes in three lovely colour options.

PROS

  • Nice design
  • Hemmed sleeves
  • Comfortable

CONS

  • Thick for Summer

RRP – £80

SIZES: S-3XL

COLOUR: Navy-Coronet Blue / Ceramic-Navy / White-Pearl Grey

Peter Millar Excursionist Performance Pullover

4.5 star review

Reviewed by Mike Robertson

The quarter zip – a classic piece in any golfer’s wardrobe. The Peter Millar Excursionist Performance Pullover is a very classy garment. The navy colourway is clean-looking, and the minimalist branding (just the PM logo on a metal tab) is right up my street.

I wore this pullover for a spring round at Alwoodley Golf Club, and it was extremely comfortable, breathable and lightweight. A key design feature is that the collar isn’t too high, so it doesn’t touch your chin when swinging – which is a nice touch. The fit is classic Peter Millar – tailored without ever feeling tight or restrictive.

I’ve since worn this pullover several times and love the look and feel. It’s a perfect summer garment because it’s not designed to be overly warm but offers protection from the elements. I will be wearing it to multiple links courses this summer.

PROS

  • Lightweight and non-restrictive when swinging a club
  • Very subtle, classy branding
  • Classic design – will never go out of fashion

CONS

  • A little pricey for a pullover

RRP – £165

SIZES: S-2XL

COLOUR: Channel Blue / Navy / Red Pear

Glenmuir g.Selkirk
Quarter Zip Ribbed Sleeve Cotton Golf Sweater

5 star review

Reviewed by Paul Miller

This sweater was undoubtedly my favourite piece I reviewed this Spring. This was further reinforced when I stepped back into the house and received complimentary comments from both my wife and children.

I can tell you that this never happens, and so this sweater was an immediate winner! It also confirmed that this item can easily be worn on and off the course, and so it will become a go-to jumper for me whether I’m playing golf or not.

I am a standard XL, and it was true to size and a great fit. This colour combo I absolutely loved but is also available in two other colour options. It also went well with the Glenmuir polo, which is also in the pic above, and has also been reviewed.

The sweater is made from premium combed cotton, which means it is smoother and will last longer than normal cotton. It is also more breathable, making it ideal for golf in the first half of the year.

I was a big fan of the ribbed sleeves, as they made the sweater easy to swing and prevented me from constantly fiddling with the sleeves before or after the shot.

The same goes for the classy quarter zip—it is well designed and has a neat design touch of colour running either side of it.

The Glenmuir website states “this sweater not only enhances your performance on course but also elevates your style beyond it.” The fact that it has elevated my credibility within my household means this item transcends fashion – it has crossed over boundaries to make an impact way beyond putting on a simple sweater. For that reason, like all the reviews on the Glenmuir site, it gets 5 out of 5.

PROS

  • Breathable
  • Excellent design
  • Great colour options

CONS

  • None

RRP – £85

SIZES: S-2XL

COLOUR: Light Grey Marl-Navy / Navy-Light Grey Marl / Charcoal Marl-Light Grey Marl

FootJoy Inset Stripe Chill-Out Sweater

5 star review

Reviewed by Josh Stephens

Being someone who is familiar with FootJoy clothing, I was looking forward to seeing if the 2024 spring range was at the usual high FootJoy standard.

It’s fair to say this jumper definitely was! I found it very comfortable, light, and breathable, yet not too loose or baggy to get in the way of my swing.

Furthermore, it is a warm jumper which could easily be layered in winter, making a great option for an all year round jumper.

The charcoal colour scheme goes well with a variety of different coloured trousers and shirts making it a very versatile addition to my golfing wardrobe.

I am a medium, and this jumper is also a medium, which fits well, so there is no need to size up or down.

Overall, this sweater gets 5 out of 5 due to its comfort and versatility. I would have no qualms wearing it off the course, but more importantly, it is a 12-month-of-the-year sweater that is going to get a lot of use during 2024 and beyond! I wholeheartedly recommend it!

PROS

  • Breathables
  • Athletic fit
  • Can we worn all year round

CONS

  • None
