Tiger Woods would win the Masters just two years later. At the time he was very quickly rewriting the amateur record books in the States, having already won three US Junior Amateurs and he was two thirds of the way to his US Amateur hat-trick.
Royal Porthcawl in 1995 would be his only Walker Cup appearance and it would be a memorable one – but not for the usual reasons.
Up against the 19-year-old Woods was another rookie but this was a 35-year-old career amateur who was the polar opposite to the teenager in terms of their golf.
Where Woods hit it miles and, relatively speaking, all over the place, Gary Wolstenholme was very short but very steady. He had already played the Masters and Open courtesy of his Amateur Championship victory over Bob May at Ganton in 1991.
The pair would meet again on the Sunday but it is their Saturday singles that will always be best remembered in Walker Cup history.
