TaylorMade’s TP5 range includes two tour golf balls in the TP5 and the TP5X. Both offer something different for individual needs but today we are taking a look at the TP5 to see if it could be the ball for you.

NCG SUMMARY

The TaylorMade TP5 golf ball is the softer of the balls in the TP5 range. Its soft urethane cover gets you ultimate spin and stopping power with irons, wedges and around the greens, as well as maintaining distance off the tee thanks to it’s larger core which creates a spring off the driver face. If you’re looking for that extra bit of spin this could be the ball for you

PROS

  • Increased spin into and around the greens
  • Soft feel
  • Consistent launch

CONS

  • Less distance off the tee than the TP5X
  • Less ball speed off the face

First Impressions

Similar to the TaylorMade TP5X the TP5 comes with the signature TaylorMade arrow for alignment on one side of the golf ball. The whole TP5 collection has the yellow colourway option as well as the TaylorMade pix collection which have some interesting prints. This week a frankenstein’s head design has been released! The TaylorMade team are really pushing the creative designs within the golf ball collection.

NGC Verdict

I wanted a true comparison to the TP5x when testing this golf ball so I took the TP5 out on the golf course for 18 holes to see how it performed.

Branding itself as a ball that has lots of spin I was pleasantly surprised to find I didn’t lose any distance off the tee and approach shots into the green. The roll out from the tee was less than other balls I have tested but it did not directly affect my game. However, If you do want to gain some more distance this high spinner may not be quite right for you.

I found it easy to move the ball and shape shots thanks to the TaylorMade TP5 soft feel and its ability to spin. The stopping power into greens was great. I have to hit a lot of long irons into par 3’s and I had great control thanks to the ball spinning and stopping quickly. This spin transfered into my wedges and short game shots where I had optimum grab around the greens. The only complaint I have is if you already spin the ball with your approach shots such as an elite amateur or pro golfer you could experience too much spin with this ball especially in the wind.

The ball is a good medium between hard and soft feel. With putting I didn’t find the ball sprung off the face too much and as always really liked the arrow logo on the side of the side of the ball for alignment.

Overall, the TaylorMade TP5 offers a tour standard of performance with enhanced spin without sacrificing distance off the tee. If you want to step up your game and get great control with approach shots and short shots around the green this is the ball for you.
