Equipment editor Hannah Holden puts SkyCaddie’s latest GPS to the test

SkyCaddie SX550 review

The new SkyCaddie SX550 has been travelling the country with me in the last few weeks as the golf season got underway and it would be an understatement to say I have been mightily impressed.

SkyCaddie SX550 review: First impressions

I have been using the SX400 for the last two seasons, so couldn’t wait to get my hands on this new model from SkyCaddie.

Instantly the thing that stands out is the size, this model is much larger and gives you an even better view of the stunning graphics.

SkyCaddie SX550 review: The technology

SkyCaddie are saying the SX550 has the largest screen of any GPS on the market. The HD screen means the graphics show up in incredible detail and give you a really great preview of the hole ahead. Despite having a bigger screen overall the device is slimmer and lighter than the previous SX500 model.

SkyCaddies Dynamic HoleVue technology gives you a great overview of the hole ahead. It is dynamic as it autorotates depending on where you are standing.

IntelliGreen Pro technology means you can get a direct view of the green, hazards and hole ahead. It also rotates depending on where you are playing from to make the yardages as precise as possible. If you have a pin sheet you can even input the exact custom pin positions ahead of time.

Intellipath means you can use the touchscreen to click anywhere on the hole and get instant yardages to hazards or check run out distances and decide on lay-up areas.

Initially it comes with more than 30,000 golf courses pre-loaded. With the Wi-Fi connectivity you no longer need to connect to a computer to update these.

SkyCaddie SX550 review: NCG verdict

The SkyCaddie has quickly become my go to piece of kit out on the golf course. I play different golf courses, week in and week out so the graphics are perfect to guide me round unknown courses.

I love the fact I can click anywhere on the hole map and quick get yardages to my intended landing zones and also all those pesky bunkers.

The picture quality is exceptional and makes this a stand out product on the market. The graphics are really bright and clear, with an exceptional level of detail.

I think for the majority of golfers using a GPS over a laser would actually help your course strategy as often we fire too aggressively at pins we shouldn’t be going for. I love having the front middle and back distances so I can choose which area of the green is easiest to hit and see how best to avoid any hazards.

SkyCaddie SX550 review

One of the most impressive features for me is just how good the battery life is. SkyCaddie are saying it can easily last more than 36 holes. I got four rounds out of this, all on different days, without recharging the device once.

Fortunately for us English golfers the device is highly water resistant making it perfect for bad weather golf. I have certainly played a fair bit of that recently.

I have enjoyed testing the SkyCaddie SX550 so much, it has become a piece of equipment I wouldn’t play a competition without.
