Could this club bump your short-game performance? Hannah Holden takes a closer look

Ping ChipR

For many golfers chipping is a struggle, whether it is blading or chunking shots, there is nothing worse than standing over the ball and feeling uncomfortable. The Ping ChipR aims to bridge the gap between wedges and putters to offer something which is really easy and confidence inspiring to use.

Ping ChipR: First Impressions

When I first heard Ping were releasing a chipper, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But the reality is so much better than I imagined, with a refreshed version of a classic club.

Ping ChipR

I really like the fact this is much more iron like in styling and doesn’t have a typically chipper look.

Ping ChipR: The Technology

The ChipR is designed to be used with a putting style stroke, but it actually combines elements of putters and wedges to help provide a short-game solution for golfers around the greens.

The club is the length of a putter, but with the loft of a 9-iron. This allows golfers to play shots up to 40 yards in length with better consistency and distance control.

“Applying a putting-style stroke takes a lot of the margin for error out of chip shots and is more comfortable for a lot of golfers. Knowing that, we’re building the ChipR at our standard putter length and lie angle to make setting up to the ball easier while providing the right amount of loft to get the ball in the air and eventually rolling closer to the hole. We recommend applying the same amount of force for a putt of the same distance. A lot of golfers will be amazed at how easy it is to use and more importantly, the number of strokes they’ll be saving.”

John K Solheim, Ping president

The club’s compact size, shallow face and cambered sole to help make it more versatile from a variety of lies. The precision milled MicroMax grooves deliver consistent and predictable trajectories for improved control.

Ping ChipR

“We’ve learned a lot since my grandfather, Karsten Solheim, invented the Chipo, but his insights were spot on as always. Our research indicates 1/3 of golfers who tested the ChipR saw better results compared to a traditional wedge. We’ve engineered a lot of technology into the ChipR to help golfers avoid the poor chip shot and save strokes around the green. It represents another score-lowering option from our engineers for golfers in search of game improvement and more enjoyment on the golf course.”

John K Solheim, Ping president

If you want to see a bump in your short game performance, this is definitely worth a look.
