We review the Adams XTD irons as part of the 2015 irons test

First impressions: Very sleek and compact with a really cool design. I’d not had any experience of using Adams irons but the first impressions were very positive.

What they say: A floating face and hollow design delivers a consistently faster face, adding forgiveness throughout.

Tungsten weights in the sole optimise the centre of gravity location.

Better players who prefer a thin topline design and the feel of a forged iron, will appreciate the easy to hit playability of the XTD Forged Irons.

NCG verdict:

JS – This was a bit of an eye-opener for me because it was easily the sleekest iron I tested on the day. I must admit, I was aware of the compact head at address so it took me a while to build confidence.

I loved the short irons but to be honest, the long irons are not for me. One day I’d love them to be!

HOT: I loved using the pitching wedge especially – the feel and precision are something else
NOT: You do need to be a good ball striker to use these

DM –  We all know Adams make great hybrids but you might not be aware that they design irons that look and play as well as these.

You only have to see the address view to know that these are easy on the eye and the work of genuine craftsmen.

What makes them special is that the slot in the sole really does produce some high ball speeds.

Ally that to the feel of a forged iron and you have a product that deserves wider attention. This is tour-calibre product.

HOT: Great looks, impressive technology
NOT: Custom fit options are limited
