It feels to me like the spot for the number one hybrid on the market is firmly up for grabs. Callaway are certainly aiming to hit that mark with a number of different options available now, which includes the Callaway Elyte X hybrid. This offers a bit more forgiveness than their other offerings and ultimately completes their line-up so there is a hybrid for everybody. Here’s our full Callaway Elyte X hybrid review….

Callaway Elyte X Hybrid Review: NCG Summary

National Club Golfer and National Club Golfer magazine
    NCG SUMMARY

The Callaway Elyte X Hybrid is a confidence-inspiring option that’s ideally suited to players seeking added forgiveness, draw bias, and distance. While it might not suit every eye, its power-packed performance makes it one of the most versatile hybrids in Callaway’s current lineup.

    • Oversized, confidence-boosting head shape
    • Draw bias is good for those who struggle with loosing it to the right
    • Impressive ball speed and distance gains
    • Forgiving across the face

    CONS

    • Lower launch than some may prefer

At address, the first thing you’ll notices is that the Callaway Elyte X Hybrid has a slightly oversized head. This is especially noticeable up against the standard Elyte hybrid model and is of course to help promote that more draw bias. The oversized head does this by shifting the centre of gravity of the club head more towards the heel to turn the club face over in the swing.

    callaway elyte x hybrid review

Profile wise, it also has an elongated heel-to-toe construct. The generous face size inspires confidence, and the sleek color scheme elevates the aesthetic appeal. I found during my initial testing that there was plenty of face to aim for, so golfers can always be confident of a more middled strike. For players who like a bigger profile behind the ball, the Elyte X certainly delivers.

    NCG Review

Tested in a 3-hybrid setup with a stiff shaft and standard settings, the Elyte X Hybrid actually surprised me with standout performance numbers. The ball speed averaged 141.7 mph, noticeably higher than the standard Elyte model which I didn’t expect. I also averaged a total carry 234 yards, with 217 yards of carry, that was with a one mis-hit as well.

The club is engineered for a draw-biased ball flight, with a center of gravity closer to the heel to promote easier face closure. In testing, this translated to a consistent shot pattern that favored the left side, ideal for players struggling with a fade. Spin rates and side angle data supported the built-in anti-fade design.

Although I did find that this X model didn’t launch as high or stop as quickly as the standard model. But this was definitely more powerful, I could even feel the difference with how quick the ball was coming off the face.

In terms of technology, Callaway has included their AI 10x Face technology. This essentially means it has a variable thickness face with ai-designed sweet spots to improve forgiveness on all strike locations.

Overall, I think the Callaway Elyte X Hybrid is a powerful and forgiving club that excels in helping players square the face and gain more consistency. It is a vey easy club to use with its oversized head and isn’t hard to launch it up into the air off the ground. While its draw bias and larger profile might not be for everyone, it’s an outstanding option for those looking to reduce a slice or add distance.

    About the author

    Callaway Epic Max driver review
    Jack Backhouse

A member of the PGA for 13 years, Jack has lived golf for more than half his life. Inspired by Tiger Wood’s winning putt at the 2008 US Open, an obsession began with watching slow motion golf swings on the internet and reading What’s In The Bag articles in magazines.

Not destined for a life behind the desk in a pro shop, Jack has focussed more on coaching, working closely with regional teams in North Yorkshire and helping golfers of all levels on their journey to enjoying playing the game more. Jack has coached many junior golfers into the county teams, and once worked with a player at the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie.

After letting his game fall apart prior to COVID, Jack rediscovered his love for playing golf after joining Silloth Golf Club in 2020 and whipping round the windy, firm links course. Playing regularly with a half set of clubs he has a passion for shot making and developing skill, and claims to have the sharpest 30-100 yard game in the North of England (only because he doesn’t know anyone in the South), and now maintains a +1 handicap at a club much closer to home, Sand Moor GC.

Jack has always tinkered with his equipment, once building his own Frankenstein one length set of clubs after watching Bryson DeChambeau burst onto the scene after winning the US Amateur. He firmly believes in getting custom fit and is happy to debate anyone about blade irons being superior to any other iron category.

Jack loves: playing quickly, 2 ball golf, match play, heathland courses, pencil bags, foursomes, Tiger Wood’s swing 2005-2009.

Jack hates: buggies, unnecessary trees, giving shots, the 7 iron loft debate, graphite shaft lovers weird superiority complex.
