Golf trousers with a modern twist – but should they be making their way into your wardrobe? Alex Perry puts them to the test

If you look a bit closer next time you’re watching golf on TV, you’ll spot Macade gear on the likes of major champion Jennifer Kupcho, as well as Garrick Higgo and Lucak Bjerregaard, who have six PGA and DP World Tour wins between them.
If you don’t know Macade, they are a Swedish golf apparel brand – or “concept”, as they describe themselves, founded by a group of sportswear designers who also happened to be avid golfers. They came with a plan to make clothing for the “new generation of golfer who wants the same precision engineering and design in their clothes as they expect in their golf clubs”. No pressure, then.
There’s something rather satisfying about how these newer, smaller companies go about their business. Everything arrives in a little box, each item neatly packaged up in recyclable zip-lock bags, and a bag of free tees thrown in is a nice touch. Everything about just receiving the package screams quality.
When I opened the Four-Way Stretch Joggers, I was immediately taken by how nice the fabric is. Perhaps it was the “joggers” in the name, but here in the UK we associate that with a more cotton-polyester combo. These, though, are a more golf trouser-like polyester and spandex mix.
In terms of pockets, two on the front, two on the back, just how we like it, while the Macade logo is unoffensively noted in the usual position.
Overall they look great, but my favourite bit about them is the cuffed ankles which feature a zip to allow you to customise the look and feel, which is a lovely touch.

Macade have managed to combine a the traditional button-and-belt-buckle system with a modern elasticated waistband that features a silicone gel to hold your shirt in place and prevent it from coming untucked during your swing. How cool is that?
Immediately I’m hit by how comfortable they are. Golf trousers, you see, have long been my apparel nemesis. I always go for my usual size – 34 waist, 32 leg – but I can never seem to get it right. (Or, perhaps I should say, the manufacturer never seems to get it right.)
The Macade Joggers come in the usual waist sizes from 30 to 38, with three length options: Short, which they recommend for golfers 5-foot-9 and shorter; Regular, for golfers 5-foot-10 to to 6-foot-2; and Long, for those of us tipping over the 6-3 mark.
Now, my body is odd in that my height comes from my torso and my legs are actually relatively normal (thanks, mum) so I went for my usual 34 waist in Regular length. This turned out to be the right decision, because the ankle cuffs, whether zipped or unzipped, sit nicely just above the collar of my golf shoes.
So let’s get swinging. With more regular golf trousers, things tend to shift (that noise you hear is a thousand men nodding in unison) and the freedom of movement is restricted, but the Macade Joggers – and I’m going to stick my neck out here – are the most comfortable golf trousers I’ve ever worn.
At no point in my round did I feel like I was making adjustments, or having to tuck my shirt back in after a swing – all these little things that you don’t really notice until they’re not there any more. There’s none of that annoying chafing when you’re walking, they don’t ride or slide, they don’t cling to your legs – even as slim fit – and, crucially, they aren’t flapping about while you’re standing over a slippy four-footer.

In terms of weather conditions, I tested these on a chilly day with a threat of rain in the air and I didn’t at any point feel like I need an extra layer. (Those are for up top, right?) The slimline fit means slipping waterproofs on and off in wet weather will be no issue.
I couldn’t be more impressed, and I think the only change I would make is to switch out the buttonhole for a pop-button. But if that’s the only criticism I can find, you know you’re onto a winner.
They are at the higher end of the market, but can you put a price on unrivalled comfort and style? Yes, and it’s £85.
Are these the best golf trousers you can buy? It would be hard to argue against it. Golf joggers? They’re the future, but now.
Golf trousers – particularly from brands like Macade – are becoming less and less about being golf trousers and more and more about being trousers you can also wear for golf. While the Four-Way Stretch Joggers have all the right design and technology for the golf swing, they also wouldn’t look out of place in any other walk of life. I’ve found them particularly useful at my son’s football training, for example.
