TaylorMade are back with the latest changes to their hugely successful P Series. The update sees new TaylorMade P7CBs join the already launched P7MB’s and P790’s and an update to the already successful P770 model.

Across the range, three main concepts influenced the designs.Feel, craftsmanship and performance. So what’s new?

TaylorMade P700 Series

The TaylorMade P700 iron series encapsulates all of the brand’s better player irons. From your favourite tour players’ blades to the P790, which are more gameable for the average club golfer, there is a wide range of options for golfers of all ability levels.

TaylorMade P7CB

TaylorMade have quite possibly made the perfect players’ iron with the P7CB. This model is great on the eye with a great sized club head with minimal offset. Despite its small size, it offers additional forgiveness and speed compared to a traditional CB offering.

The new P7CB replaces the previous P7MC offering in the P Series line-up. Rather than being a direct replacement, this is a new iron offering with a different target market and design memo. The P7MC was designed for tour players. It is a very compact club for the best ball strikers in the game, which means it wasn’t necessarily suitable for club golfers. The P7CB attempts to address this problem. The iron development team designed this iron from scratch with the target consumer in mind: low-handicap amateur golfers.

This means it is a neat, compact iron with a minimal offset that delivers some added distance and forgiveness but still has a beautifully soft feel.

You need to hit these to believe how soft the face feels. This is remarkable, given the tech in the club head. The club head is forged four times before tungsten weighting is added low and on the perimeter to add a touch of ball speed and forgiveness. The iron is then forged again for a fifth time with 2000 tons of pressure to deliver the purest, softest feel.

This method certainly works. These feel like a super-soft blade off the face; they are incredible.

TaylorMade P770

The TaylorMade P770 irons sit one down from the brand’s super successful P790 model. The P770 is all about having the visual of a compact tour players club with hidden technology for powerful performance.

Compared to the P790, these have a more compact tour-proven shape, a thinner topline, less offset and a shorter blade length.

The P770 irons feature the same FLTD CG technology that is found in the P790 irons. This works really well to increase launch and playability in the longer irons yet allows for improved control with the scoring clubs.

P Series: The rest of the range

TaylorMade P7MB

TaylorMade’s most traditional muscle back iron offering is exceptionally popular on tour. So what was there to change?

With these clubs, it was all about working on the small details as a result of direct testing and feedback from Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa. How could TaylorMade keep the high level or feel and feedback but still improve performance?

The blade length of the club head has been reduced to give a more compact look behind the golf ball.

The sole is one millimetre narrower than the previous model, which may seem insignificant, but is a big change in the world of equipment. This has led to more bounce being added to the leading edge, creating a different hitting sensation through the turf. We also see progressive offset throughout the set to help players control shot shape and trajectory.

These irons have been designed, so creating different combo options across each model type is easy. It is great that TaylorMade has really easy loft charts to help with this but also that the pricing is per club across the range so there is no financial impact of combo setting to put people off getting the set that is most optimal for them.

TaylorMade P790

The TaylorMade P790s irons are the most versatile option in the P700 series. Designed to suit a wide range of players, they aim to provide a mid-high launch flight with mid-low spin.

New for this 2023 version is FLTD CG technology, a strategic design feature that positions the centre of gravity lowest in the long irons while moving it progressively higher as you move down the set. This has been done by redesigning the tungsten weighting in the long to mid irons. This is important as it makes the longer irons easier to launch while ensuring you hit the optimal spin and launch window with your middle irons.

As we have seen in previous models, the club head features SpeedFoam Air which sits inside the forged hollowed body and dampens sounds and vibrations to give you that player’s iron feel.

The 2023 version of the P790s offers a larger sweet spot than before. Thanks to new internal shaping yield the face can capture more shots without compromising on accuracy or ball speed.
