TravisMathew/Cuater is the golf shoe brand trusted by the likes of John Rahm. We got out hands on a pair of Cuater The Moneymaker Lux golf shoes back in 2023 and now they are £39 it is now somewhat of summer shoe no brainer purchase.
This review was conducted in 2023 and pleasantly surprised Jonathan Taylor with how well the shoe performed. Although it is limited as a summer golf shoe and currently priced at just £39, it could be the perfect pair for anyone seeking comfortable footwear this summer. Cuater entered the golf shoe market just in 2020 and so is not as well established as many better-known shoe brands. The brand offers a select range of footwear which has a simple focus, namely comfort and style with the technology you need and nothing extra you don’t.
So, how do you pronounce the name of the brand? Well, think of Jonathan Ross saying ‘crater’ or, if you haven’t heard of him, try saying ‘Equator’, then take off the ‘E’. Here we test Cuater The Moneymaker Lux, which is their casual, spikeless shoe offering.
On first impressions this shoe looked rather like a tennis shoe; a well-constructed tennis shoe but with nothing that was immediately striking or interesting. Welcome to The Cuater Moneymaker Lux, which offers a casual, athletic styling.
Now the original Cuater Moneymaker golf shoes, which remains available, comes with a fabric upper. In the Lux, the fabric is replaced by premium leather at an additional cost of £10.99 which strikes me as remarkably good value.
The leather upper looks and feels to be of the highest quality. I tested the version in white. It is also available in black with a contrasting white sole. As is the Cuater way, there’s just an understated ‘C’ on the lateral aspect of the heel piece and some low-key contrasting embossing on the leather tongue.
There is a pattern of small perforations to the outer and inner of the mid-portion of the shoe to help with breathability. The contrasting black shoe liner feels soft and well-padded. Despite the casual look, there are plenty of features which enable the shoe to perform.

There’s a very firm heel piece which is nicely cushioned on the inside, and the shoe has strong torsional stability – something I wasn’t expecting from the relaxed look of the Moneymaker.
Turning over to look at the sole of the shoe, we see that this has a spikeless configuration but a pretty aggressive configuration with 85 TPU moulded nubs which promises good grip. Each shoe weighed in at 390 grammes which is pretty much par for the course for a leather spikeless style.
The UK size 7.5 (Euro 41) standard width fitted my usually sized 7.5 wide foot comfortably but quite closely around the toes out of the box. It seems to me that the Moneymaker is a little narrower fitting than the other Cuater models I have tested so this may not be a shoe for those of you with particularly wide feet.
On Course Testing
Testing was carried out over one round in damp conditions underfoot (but no rain) on my home heathland course. I have already mentioned the initial narrow feel, but this never amounted to uncomfortable rubbing or blistering. The shoe was particularly comfortable underfoot, which I think is due to the foam midsole in the SweetSpot Cushioning System, which Cuater tells us ‘delivers lightweight, all-day comfort with layers of cushioning and support’.
And the comfort of the shoe was allied to strong performance. My heel felt nicely locked in, and the TPU spikeless bottom ensured that my feet were not slipping or sliding in the damp conditions.
Although it was damp underfoot, there was no rain, so it’s not possible to comment on waterproof features. The shoes come with a 12-month waterproof guarantee and so I wouldn’t expect any issues here. Similarly, I played in pretty cool conditions, so cannot comment on breathability either.

The 19th hole
Although this is a spikeless shoe with a relaxed and versatile look, the configuration of the outsole doesn’t particularly lend itself to all-day use, which is perhaps not surprising for a shoe that performs so nicely on the course.
I really got to like the look of the admittedly understated Moneymaker, and it does look particularly good in white. I would say that I think I will be reserving this for dry days in the summer months because although the leather upper will be easy enough to care for, I can see it will be a challenge to keep the white midsole/outsole looking as good as new.
I have reviewed three Cuater models now, and I think they have produced a very impressive range. They don’t offer multiple colour options or lots of different models, but what they do consistently offer is comfort, good looks, performance and quality construction in an understated package.
I think that the pricing is reasonable for such a well-constructed leather and I envisage that I will be wearing them on the dry summer days that are just around the corner.
