About Walton Heath
Walton Heath is a golf club in Surrey, in the South West of England. The club comprises of two 18-hole golf courses which are notorious for being covered in heather.
In 2023, Walton Heath hosted the AIG Women’s Open, but this was not the first time the course had experienced fame. Walton Health has hosted numerous events since its founding in 1903. It was the venue for the European Open in the seventies and eighties, the host of the Ryder Cup in 1981, British Ladies Amateur in 2000, the Senior Open and The British Masters in 2018.
The club has also boasted an impressive alumni with prime ministers A.J. Balfour, Lloyd George, Bonar Law and Winston Churchill among its members. The first captain of the club, in 1935, was HRH the Prince of Wales. However, the club has only ever had four professionals; James Braid, the five time Open Champion, is one of these four.
Both courses at Walton Heath have been consistently rated in the UK’s top 100 courses, with the Old Course also being rated as one of the top 100 in the world. In 2022, NCG placed the Old Course 20th in the country.
The Women’s open was played on a composite layout of the old and new courses at Walton Heath in 2023. Although it was a bit cloudier than when I played the course, it was a picturesque setting for the competition.
Lilia Vu triumphed at the women’s open, winning by six shots. It was a come back few were expecting, including Vu herself who had considered quitting entirely after a disappointing rookie year on the LPGA Tour in 2019. Charley Hull, the home favourite from Northamptonshire, placed second.
