Spey Bay Golf Club is, without doubt, one of the more unique venues on the northeastern coastline of Scotland.
There are plenty of hazards, including the gorse-lined fairways, the bunkers made of beach sand, and of course, the North Sea on your right for the closing stretch.
The pair of short par 3s, at the 8th and 15th, are both fantastic proof that a par 3 does not need to be more than 200 yards to be testing. The green at the former is only ten yards deep, making club selection absolutely vital.
The ongoing works on the course will see the club have the opportunity to use different routings. When the work is complete, there will be 22 green complexes and tee boxes so the course can also be fully reversible.
History
As with many a venue in the north of Scotland, Spey Bay Golf Club has been on this piece of land north of Fochabers for more than a century.
1888 Open Championship runner-up, who also had a hand in the design of Adare Manor, was the man behind the out and back design of the golf course.
The trio of Clayton, DeVries and Pont have been drafted in over the last few years to oversee significant changes to the golf course, in a process that is still ongoing.
What makes Spey Bay Golf Club special?
Firstly, its location is stunning. Situated on the very edge of the North Sea, with the shingle beach coming into play through much of the back nine.
Prior to reaching the coastline, you play a number of holes in and amongst the gorse that line both sides, often making you feel like you are on your own out on the golf course.
And finally, if you’re lucky, you might even see the odd dolphin frolicking about in the water…

Where does it rank?
