Why Cyprus is growing as a golf destination

The golf here is special - and it's set to get even better

You will undoubtedly be well aware of Cyprus’s allure as a holiday destination. Warm temperatures, copious amounts of sunshine, even during the winter, the freshest of cuisines, vibrant nightlife, family-friendly resorts, sites of historical interest, a coastline boasting an array of beaches – the list goes on and on.

However, I’m guessing the Mediterranean island may not have necessarily entered your thoughts when looking to book a golfing holiday.

The Algarve and Spain’s sun-kissed coastline tend to grab the headlines, but there’s a strong argument to say Cyprus should be mentioned in the same breath as these two top golf destinations.

The popular region around Paphos is currently home to just four courses but it is definitely a case of quality over quantity. And with the Cypriot government promoting the development of up to 14 courses on the island, the golf scene is set to boom over the next few years.

But you needn’t wait to lug your clubs to the airport as the current offering is already pretty special.

Take Aphrodite Hills, for example. Set in the heart of a colossal resort of the same name, the 18-hole course, which has recently undergone a €2.5million upgrade, hits your senses from the off and doesn’t let up throughout the entire round.

In contrast, Minthis Hills is located high above Paphos, offering sweeping views of the Troodos Mountains. The layout is a real test of your powers of restraint and course management. Tall trees line the majority of fairways and the greens are true and fast.

Found close to Aphrodite Hills, Secret Valley offers arguably one of the most demanding and thought-provoking collection of holes in Cyprus.

Tucked away in the middle of a narrow valley, the course is secret by name, secret by nature – hidden greens, hidden pins, hidden bunkers and all kinds of hidden delights.

Meanwhile, Eléa, designed by Sir Nick Faldo, looks on the surface like a Mediterranean parkland course, however the proximity of the sea and potential for strong winds can give it a links feel. You could play Eléa on consecutive days and feel like you have played two very different courses if the wind changes.
