Reason for a Old Thorns Golf Club review
This is the perfect base for a golfing trip to Hampshire, offering easy access to the likes of Liphook, Blackmoor, Hayling and Stoneham, to name but a few. The modern hotel has all the amenities you would expect so the resort works on all levels.
Where is Old Thorns?
Old Thorns is close to the A3 between Hindhead and Petersfield. That means you can get here easily from Hampshire’s south coast and London alike.
What to expect
A real surprise. The surrounding area looks flat and is lined by evergreens and gorse. Old Thorns, however, offers dramatic changes in elevation, and has much more of a parkland feel than you will find at the nearby likes of Liphook and Blackmoor.
My best bit
You can’t resist on the 17th tee. It’s a par 5 where the tee is on top of the world and the fairway is way below. Get the big dog out, widen your stance and give it a good rip. From a good drive there’s even a chance of going for the green in two for the big hitters.
What to look out for
The views. You can be seduced for some of the elevated tees so once it’s time to play, zone in on the task at hand. Otherwise you’ll be playing your next shot from the trees. Or reloading.
When I go back
I will try to fly the tree on the right off the 1st tee. You can’t tell on your visit visit, but the green is pretty much just on the other side. A short pitch sounds better than being 150 yards away and blocked out by the tree.
